Fashion Forward: A Blend of Tradition and Trend
Apparel consistently tops the festive shopping list, and this year is no different. Reports show fashion is the leading category, with around 69% of consumers planning to buy new clothes. The trend for 2026 is a mix of classic and contemporary. While
traditional ethnic wear like sarees, kurta sets, and lehengas in jewel tones like emerald green and burgundy are in demand for occasions like Diwali, there's a growing preference for versatile pieces. Shoppers are looking for outfits that can transition from a day puja to an evening party. This has led to the rise of Indo-Western fusion wear, embroidered co-ord sets, and straight-cut silhouettes that prioritize both style and comfort. Sustainability is also a key consideration, with a noticeable interest in handloom fabrics and eco-friendly choices.
The Great Gadget Upgrade
Electronics and gadgets are a close second on the shopping agenda, with about half of the consumers looking to upgrade their devices. Smartphones remain a hot-ticket item, particularly 5G-enabled models in the mid-range segment from brands like OnePlus and Samsung. Beyond phones, the ecosystem of personal tech is expanding. Wearable electronics, including smartwatches that monitor health metrics and true wireless (TWS) earbuds offering noise cancellation, are extremely popular. The work-from-home culture continues to influence purchases, with ongoing demand for laptops, ergonomic stands, and other computer accessories to optimize home office setups.
Smarter Homes, Festive Homes
Sprucing up the home is a major festive activity, and this year, it's all about smart and efficient upgrades. Home décor and furniture are a priority for 51% of shoppers. In the large appliances category, consumers are drawn to energy-efficient models of refrigerators and washing machines. Smart TVs, offering better viewing experiences for family entertainment, are also a popular purchase. With growing awareness around air quality, especially post-Diwali, air purifiers are becoming a must-have appliance in many urban homes. In the kitchen, gadgets that offer convenience, like air fryers and coffee machines, are seeing steady demand.
Gifting and Celebrations
The spirit of the festive season is rooted in gifting, and this trend remains strong. Classic gifts like sweets and dry fruit hampers are perennial favourites. However, there's a growing trend towards more personal and thoughtful presents. This includes personal care hampers, beauty products, and eco-friendly gifts. Many shoppers are also opting to buy from local, handmade, or small businesses to make their festive spending more conscious and supportive of artisans. Gold and silver jewellery, especially coins with religious motifs, continue to be an auspicious and popular purchase, particularly around Dhanteras.
The Conscious Consumer
A significant trend shaping this year's festive shopping is the rise of the conscious consumer. A staggering 85% of shoppers report that they are actively trying to make eco-friendly choices. This is reflected in multiple ways: a preference for sustainable fashion, avoiding plastic decorations, and choosing products with eco-friendly packaging. Discounts and deals remain a major driver for purchases, but recommendations from social media and a brand's trustworthiness are also playing a huge role in decision-making. With shopping starting earlier than ever, consumers are more planned and intentional about what and where they buy, looking for both value and values in their festive purchases.
