A Window to the Western Ghats
The star of this new service is the Executive AC Vistadome coach, designed specifically for sightseers. These coaches are an upgrade from traditional train cars, featuring massive, wide-paned windows that stretch across the coach walls and a see-through
glass roof. The seats are perhaps the most innovative feature; they can rotate 180 degrees, allowing passengers to always face the direction of the most stunning scenery, regardless of the train's movement. This immersive design ensures travellers don’t miss a moment of the lush landscapes, especially as the train winds through the picturesque ghat sections. Introduced as a temporary trial, this addition marks a significant boost for rail tourism in the region, connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala with an experience rather than just a commute.
The Scenic Route Unveiled
The Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328) traverses some of the most beautiful terrains in South India. The key highlight of this journey is the scenic Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, a route famous for its dramatic curves, verdant hills, and the stunning Aryankavu pass. As the train makes its way through this stretch, passengers in the Vistadome coach are treated to an unparalleled, up-close view of the Western Ghats' natural splendour. The journey from Madurai takes you through key stations like Sengottai, Punalur, and Kollam before reaching Guruvayur. The train's daytime schedule through the ghats has been specifically praised, as it allows travellers to make the most of the daylight and fully appreciate the surrounding beauty. It's a sensory feast, transforming a simple train ride into a memorable expedition through nature.
Schedule and Timings
This special service is not available daily, so planning is essential. The Vistadome coach is attached to the train on specific days of the week on a trial basis running from October 22, 2026, to mid-January 2027. For Train No. 16327, departing from Madurai to Guruvayur, the Vistadome coach is available on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The train departs Madurai at 11:35 AM. For the return journey on Train No. 16328, from Guruvayur to Madurai, the coach is available on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. This schedule gives tourists and weekend travellers ample opportunity to plan a round trip. Given the immense popularity, seats have been selling out quickly, with many dates already on the waitlist.
How to Book Your Glass-Roofed Journey
Booking a seat in this special coach is straightforward. When using the IRCTC website or a booking app like RailOne, passengers should look for the 'Executive Class (EV)' category for the Madurai-Guruvayur Express on the specified days of operation. The 'EV' code specifically denotes the Vistadome coach. As this is a premium offering, the fares are higher than standard AC chair car classes. The basic fare starts at around ₹515, with the cost for the full end-to-end journey from Madurai to Guruvayur being approximately ₹1,875. Prices can vary depending on the boarding and destination stations. Advance reservations are open and highly recommended due to the limited number of seats (44 per coach) and the high demand for this unique experience.
Connecting Culture and Nature
This new service does more than just offer pretty views; it connects two of South India’s most significant pilgrimage centres: the city of Madurai, home to the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple, and Guruvayur, famous for its Krishna Temple. The introduction of the Vistadome coach is expected to significantly boost tourism for both states, encouraging travellers who might be visiting one temple town to extend their journey to the other. It offers a perfect blend for the modern traveller — a spiritual and cultural pilgrimage combined with a luxurious and nature-filled travel experience. It enhances the overall appeal of the region, positioning the train journey itself as a key part of the holiday.
