What is E-Verification?
Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) is a two-part process. The first is submitting your income and tax details on the government's e-filing portal. The second, and equally critical, step is verification. This is how you confirm to the Income Tax Department
that the information submitted is authentic and that you have indeed filed the return. Without verification, your ITR is treated as if it were never filed at all. E-verification is the digital method of completing this step instantly, using methods like Aadhaar OTP or net banking, eliminating the need to physically mail a signed document to the tax office in Bengaluru.
The High Cost of Forgetting
Ignoring the verification step has serious consequences. An unverified ITR is deemed "invalid" by the tax department. This means the entire filing process is nullified. Any tax refund you were expecting will not be processed or issued. Furthermore, if you fail to verify, you could receive a notice for non-filing of returns and may be liable for late filing fees under Section 234F, which can be up to ₹5,000. It also means you cannot carry forward any losses to offset against future income. Essentially, all the effort you put into filing your return on time is wasted if you don't complete this final, simple step.
Decoding the Verification Deadline
The clock starts ticking the moment you submit your ITR. Taxpayers now have 30 days from the date of filing to verify their return. This window was reduced from the earlier 120 days, making timely action more critical than ever. For example, if you file your return on July 30, 2026, you must e-verify it by August 29, 2026. If you miss this 30-day window, your return becomes invalid. While there is a process to request a "condonation of delay," it is a discretionary procedure with no guarantee of approval. The simplest path is to verify your return immediately after filing.
Your Guide to Instant E-Verification
The Income Tax Department offers several quick and convenient methods for e-verification, which can be completed in minutes. The most common and fastest methods include:
1. Aadhaar OTP: If your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar and your PAN is linked to Aadhaar, you can receive a One-Time Password (OTP) to instantly verify your return.
2. Net Banking: You can log into your bank's net banking portal and access the income tax e-filing option to verify your ITR without a separate login to the tax portal.
3. Bank Account EVC: You can generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) through your pre-validated bank account. The EVC is sent to your registered mobile number and email.
4. Demat Account EVC: Similar to a bank account, a pre-validated Demat account can also be used to generate an EVC for verification.
5. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): This method is typically used by corporate taxpayers and professionals whose accounts require an audit.
What Happens After You Verify?
Once you successfully e-verify your return, you will receive an acknowledgement email and SMS. The status on the e-filing portal will change to "Successfully e-Verified." This confirms that the department has accepted your return for processing. The Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) then begins its automated review of your ITR. Following this, you will receive an intimation under Section 143(1), which confirms the department's computation against your own. If a refund is due, this intimation clears the way for it to be processed and credited to your pre-validated bank account.
