This allows young professionals to upskill or reskill rapidly without pausing their careers. They can acquire targeted skills in high-demand areas like data analytics, digital marketing, AI, or project management and apply them almost immediately in the workplace. This “just-in-time” learning model is perfectly suited for a dynamic job market where agility is key to staying relevant.

A long-standing criticism of traditional education is the gap between theoretical knowledge and the practical skills demanded by employers. In fact, studies show that 95% of higher education leaders believe micro-credentials make students more prepared for the workforce. Indian employers agree, with 95% stating these credentials help reduce onboarding time and costs.
The Shifting Perception of Employers
Perhaps the most compelling argument for micro-credentials is their growing acceptance in the corporate world. Employers are increasingly willing to hire and even pay a premium for candidates with validated skills. According to one report, 97% of Indian employers are willing to offer higher starting salaries to candidates with micro-credentials. Another found that employers are significantly more likely to hire a candidate with a professional certificate, as it validates their skills. For high-demand fields like Generative AI, holding a relevant micro-credential can make a candidate stand out, with 95% of employers more likely to hire them.
Are Degrees Obsolete?
This does not mean a traditional degree is worthless. Degrees still provide broad foundational knowledge, critical thinking skills, and valuable networks. However, many experts now argue that micro-credentials should be seen as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, degrees. The ideal modern professional might possess a foundational degree and then continuously “stack” micro-credentials throughout their career to specialise, pivot, or adapt to new technologies. India's National Education Policy 2020 supports this flexible, lifelong learning approach through initiatives like the National Credit Framework (NCrF), which allows for the integration of these short courses.
