The Shifting Monsoon Forecast
After a mixed performance in June and July, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast below-normal rainfall for August and September 2026. The prediction suggests that rainfall for the remainder of the season is likely to be less than 94%
of the Long Period Average. This weakening is a cause for concern because the latter half of the monsoon is crucial for maturing summer-sown (Kharif) crops and replenishing water reservoirs for the year ahead. While some eastern and northern parts of the country might still receive normal showers, a significant deficit is expected across western, central, and southern India, which are major agricultural belts.
