Know the 2026 Puja Calendar
First, mark your calendar. The main festivities for Durga Puja 2026 begin with Shashthi on October 16 and conclude with Vijayadashami on October 21. The biggest crowds typically surge from Saptami (October 17/18) through Navami (October 20). Knowing these
key dates helps you plan which days to visit the most popular pandals and which to explore quieter corners of the city.
Plan by Zone, Not by Fame
The single biggest time-waster is crisscrossing the city to chase famous pandal names. Instead, divide your plan by zone: North, South, Central, and Salt Lake. Dedicate a day or an evening to each. North Kolkata, home to traditional pujas like Bagbazar Sarbojanin and Kumartuli Park, is dense with pandals that are often walkable from each other. South Kolkata is known for its grand, theme-based pandals like Suruchi Sangha and Ekdalia Evergreen. Tackling one cluster at a time minimises travel and maximises your experience.
Embrace the Metro
During Puja, the Kolkata Metro is your most reliable friend. While roads around major pandals are often closed to traffic, the metro runs efficiently, with special all-night services on peak days. To save time, buy a Metro Smart Card in advance to avoid long queues at ticketing counters. Map your desired pandals to the nearest metro stations. For example, Kalighat station is the gateway to a cluster of famous South Kolkata pandals like Deshapriya Park and Ekdalia Evergreen, while Shyambazar station serves iconic North Kolkata ones like Bagbazar.
Go Against the Crowd
Crowd patterns are predictable. Peak hours are generally between 8 PM and midnight. To beat the rush, go pandal hopping in the morning (between 8 AM and 11 AM) or very late at night (after 1 AM). The pandals are still beautifully lit in the late hours, but the queues are significantly shorter. An early start, around 5 AM or 6 AM, also allows you to see several pandals before the city fully wakes up and traffic builds.
Use Technology to Your Advantage
Several apps are launched or updated each year specifically for Durga Puja. Look for official apps from the Kolkata Police, like 'Utsav App' or 'Puja Bandhu App', which often provide route maps, crowd updates, and locations of essential services. Other apps like 'Durga Puja Pandal Hopper' or 'Agomoni' can help you discover pandals near your location and even find parking or toilets. Using these tools can help you make informed decisions on the go.
Walk Strategically and Stay Comfortable
Once you exit a metro station, walking is often the fastest way to get around a pandal cluster. Cabs and auto-rickshaws will be stuck in the same human traffic as everyone else. This means comfortable footwear is non-negotiable; you can easily walk over ten kilometres in a single night. Also, carry a power bank for your phone, as navigation and photography will drain your battery quickly. Keeping some cash handy for street food and water is also a wise move.
