The Southern Stretch: Mangalore to Udupi
The drive from Mangalore to Udupi along National Highway 66 is a fantastic starting point for any coastal exploration. This short 60-kilometre journey is packed with scenic beaches and cultural stops. Just off the highway, you can visit Surathkal Beach,
known for its iconic lighthouse and serene shores. Further along, the town of Mulki offers opportunities for surfing lessons. As you approach Udupi, the landscape is a mix of sleepy fishing villages and bustling towns. Udupi itself is a destination worth exploring for a couple of days, famous for its Sri Krishna Matha, and beautiful beaches like Malpe and Kaup. The drive is relatively quick, taking about an hour and a half, but the detours are what make it truly special.
The Maravanthe Marvel: Highway Between River and Sea
Perhaps the most iconic section of the entire Karnataka coastal drive is the stretch at Maravanthe. Here, NH 66 runs along a narrow strip of land with the roaring Arabian Sea on one side and the gentle Souparnika River on the other. This unique geographical formation creates a breathtaking, cinematic view that is considered one of a kind in India. After the monsoon, the river is full and the surrounding Western Ghats are a vibrant green, contrasting beautifully with the blue of the sea. While swimming can be risky due to the strong currents, it's the perfect spot to park your car, stretch your legs, and capture some stunning photographs. Nearby attractions include the serene Koteshwara Temple and the Ottinene Sunset Point, which offers panoramic views of the coastline.
The Northern Charm: Honnavar to Karwar
As you continue north, the drive from Honnavar towards Karwar reveals a quieter, more rustic side of the coast. Honnavar itself is an underrated gem, offering a beautiful mangrove boardwalk, quiet backwaters, and the pristine Kasarkod Eco Beach. A short drive from here is Murudeshwar, instantly recognizable by its towering 123-foot Shiva statue, the second tallest in the world, set against the sea. The journey continues to Gokarna, a town famous for its laid-back beaches like Om Beach and Kudle Beach, as well as the historic Mahabaleshwar Temple. The final leg to Karwar, located at the mouth of the Kali River near the Goa border, is equally picturesque. Karwar is known for its tranquil beaches like Devbagh and Tagore Beach, offering a peaceful end to your coastal journey.

A road trip along the Karnataka coast is incomplete without indulging in the local cuisine. The region is a paradise for seafood lovers, with fresh catches forming the heart of many dishes. Look for restaurants serving specialties like Mangalorean Fish Curry, Fish Rava Fry, and Prawn Gassi. For non-seafood eaters, Chicken Ghee Roast and Chicken Sukka are fiery and flavourful options. The vegetarian fare from the Udupi region is legendary. Don't miss out on trying Neer Dosa, a delicate rice crepe that pairs perfectly with coconut chutney or curries.
