The Silent Crisis Under Our Feet
Land degradation is a quiet but relentless crisis. It’s more than just visible soil erosion; it's the gradual loss of fertility, moisture, and the complex web of life within the soil that sustains agriculture. Caused by unsustainable farming practices,
deforestation, and overgrazing, this process is turning productive fields into tired, less fertile ground. A recent study published in Nature Food found that this isn't a future problem—it's already here, actively limiting global food production. The research provides stark evidence that land degradation is directly linked to lower crop yields worldwide. Globally, this degradation is associated with an annual loss of about 20 million tonnes of crop production, which is enough to feed over 70 million people.
From Fertile Ground to Food Insecurity
The link between healthy soil and the food on our plates is direct and unbreakable. Degraded land produces less food, and the food it does produce is often less nutritious. As soil loses its structure and organic matter, its ability to hold water diminishes, making crops more vulnerable to droughts—a growing threat in a changing climate. A July 2026 study quantified this impact, finding that for every 10% increase in land degradation, there's a corresponding 2% increase in the 'yield gap'—the difference between potential and actual crop production. This not only threatens the availability of food but also its affordability, as projections suggest continued degradation could lead to significant increases in global food prices. For farmers, it means lower incomes and a greater reliance on expensive chemical fertilisers to maintain yields, creating a vicious cycle of dependency and further degradation.
The Restoration Revolution
The solution is as old as farming itself: giving back to the land. Restoring agricultural land means actively rebuilding soil health and ecosystem functions. This isn't about letting land go wild; it's about adopting smarter, regenerative farming practices. Methods like agroforestry (integrating trees with crops), planting cover crops to protect bare soil, practicing no-till farming to avoid disturbing the soil structure, and managed livestock grazing can reverse the damage. These techniques help replenish organic matter, improve water retention, and bring back the beneficial microbes that are essential for plant health. By focusing on restoration, we can make our existing farmland more resilient and productive for the long term.
An Investment with Huge Returns
Restoring degraded land is one of the most powerful investments we can make, with benefits extending far beyond the farm gate. Economically, the returns are staggering. Studies have shown that every dollar invested in land restoration can yield up to $30 in economic benefits. One analysis found that restoring just 12% of degraded agricultural land could boost the incomes of small farmers by tens of billions of dollars annually and provide food for 200 million people. Environmentally, healthy soils act as a massive carbon sink, pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere. Restored landscapes also improve water cycles, reduce erosion, and create habitats that support biodiversity. It’s a solution that tackles food security, climate change, and economic stability all at once.
A Critical Mission for India
For India, with its vast population and significant reliance on agriculture, this issue is particularly urgent. Nearly a third of the country's land area is affected by degradation. Recognising this challenge, India has made one of the world's largest commitments to land restoration under the Bonn Challenge, pledging to restore 26 million hectares by 2030. As of mid-2026, the country has already made substantial progress, reporting over 21 million hectares brought under restoration efforts. These initiatives, which often integrate with existing programs for water conservation and afforestation, are crucial for supporting the livelihoods of millions of farmers, securing water availability in drought-prone regions, and ensuring a stable food supply for the future.
