A New Daily Connection to the Coast
Central Railway has launched a new daily express train connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Sawantwadi Road in the Sindhudurg district of South Konkan. This service, which had its inaugural run on September 3, 2026, addresses
a long-standing demand for better daily connectivity between the financial capital and the picturesque coastal region. The train is expected to benefit not just tourists but also traders, students, and residents by providing a reliable link to key towns. Railway officials stated that the service aims to ease crowding on other Konkan-bound trains and support the regional economy.
Route, Halts, and Coach Comfort
The CSMT-Sawantwadi Express covers a distance of about 510 kilometres, with 22 stops along the scenic Konkan Railway network. Key halts include Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, Sindhudurg, and Kudal, before its final destination at Sawantwadi Road. This extensive list of stops is designed to improve access to numerous towns along the coast. The train is equipped with modern LHB coaches, offering a mix of classes including First Class AC, AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, sleeper, and general second class, ensuring a comfortable journey for different types of travellers.
Unlocking Weekend Tourism Potential
The introduction of this daily service is a significant boost for tourism in the Konkan. The train provides easier access to a host of popular destinations famous for their beaches, forts, and temples. From the station at Sawantwadi Road, tourists can more easily reach the beaches of Tarkarli and Devbagh, or explore the historic town of Sawantwadi itself. Other stops like Ratnagiri open up access to Ganpatipule and its famous temple and beach, while Khed and Chiplun serve as gateways to other coastal and hinterland attractions. Officials expect the train to be particularly popular during festivals and holiday seasons when demand for travel to the Konkan surges.
A Simpler Alternative to Road Travel
For years, the primary options for reaching the Konkan coast from Mumbai were driving or taking a bus, both of which are subject to the unpredictable traffic on the Mumbai-Goa highway. This new train presents a hassle-free alternative, allowing travellers to avoid the stress of road travel and instead enjoy a relaxed journey. While the inaugural special took over 13 hours, the regular service is expected to provide a dependable schedule, which will be announced by Central Railway. This makes planning a weekend trip more straightforward, as travellers can rely on fixed departure and arrival times, maximising their time at the destination.
What About Vistadome?
While this new CSMT-Sawantwadi Express uses a conventional LHB rake, travellers seeking the panoramic views of a Vistadome coach still have options on the Konkan route. The Dadar-Madgaon Jan Shatabdi Express is equipped with Vistadome coaches, celebrated for their glass roofs and wide windows that offer breathtaking views of the Western Ghats, especially during the monsoon. That journey remains a favourite for those who want to make the travel itself a key part of their experience. The launch of the new daily express, however, prioritises direct, daily connectivity and capacity to meet the high passenger demand on this busy corridor.
