Secure Your Luggage and Peace of Mind
One of the primary concerns on an overnight train is the safety of your belongings. A simple but effective solution is to carry a light metal chain and a sturdy padlock. Most berths in sleeper and AC coaches have bars or loops underneath the lower seat
where you can secure your suitcase or backpack. This allows you to sleep soundly, especially at night or during station halts when you might be less alert. For valuables like your wallet, phone, and tickets, a small sling bag or waist pack that you can keep on your person at all times is highly recommended.
Create a Personal Comfort Kit
Indian Railways provides bedding in AC coaches, but not in sleeper class. Even in AC, your personal comfort can be greatly enhanced with a few small items. An inflatable neck pillow is a space-saving essential that prevents stiffness. An eye mask and a good pair of earplugs are non-negotiable for blocking out light and the inevitable noise of a shared compartment, ensuring you get quality rest. Many seasoned travellers also recommend carrying a light blanket, shawl, or a sleeping bag liner, as AC coaches can get surprisingly cold, and non-AC coaches can be drafty at night.
Prioritise Hygiene and Health
Train bathrooms can be unpredictable, so it's wise to be self-sufficient. Pack a small toiletry bag with your essentials. This should include a roll of toilet paper or tissues, wet wipes, and a potent hand sanitiser. Paper soap strips are a fantastic, mess-free alternative to carrying a bar of soap. A small, quick-dry towel also comes in handy. It's also a good idea to pack a basic first-aid kit with items like pain relievers, motion sickness tablets, antacids, and antiseptic wipes for any minor issues that may arise.
Pack Smart Snacks and Stay Hydrated
While food is available on most long-distance trains and at stations, having your own stash of snacks and water provides a reliable and often healthier alternative. Carry a large reusable water bottle that you can refill at stations. For food, pack non-perishable items like nuts, dry fruits, biscuits, protein bars, or even ready-to-eat meals like instant noodles. This ensures you have something to eat during unexpected delays or if the pantry car service isn't to your liking.
Keep Entertainment Within Arm's Reach
Long journeys can get boring, and mobile networks can be patchy. To keep yourself entertained, a fully charged power bank is an absolute must-have. Train charging points are often limited and may not always work. Before your trip, download movies, podcasts, music, or e-books onto your phone or tablet. A good pair of headphones is considerate to your fellow passengers and essential for an immersive experience. For a low-tech option, a physical book or magazine is always a reliable travel companion.
Dress for Comfort and Practicality
Your choice of clothing can significantly impact your comfort. Opt for loose-fitting, breathable fabrics. Layering is a smart strategy to adapt to fluctuating temperatures inside the train. A t-shirt, paired with a hoodie or a light jacket, allows you to adjust as needed. It's also practical to wear clothes that are comfortable enough to sleep in. Easy-to-slip-on footwear, like slippers or sandals, is convenient for walking to the restroom at night.
