In a moment of immense national pride, Patna's Bihar Museum has earned a place among the world's most elite cultural institutions. A new 2026 global guide has ranked it as the best museum in Asia, placing it ahead of iconic venues in Paris and New York.
A Landmark Global Achievement
The Bihar Museum has been ranked ninth globally on the 'World's 100 Best Museums 2026' list, compiled by the Germany-based independent travel guide 'Worth a Journey'. This remarkable feat makes it the only institution from India and Asia to feature in the top 10. The museum outranked world-famous institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which placed tenth, and the Louvre in Paris, which was ranked 31st. The global list was topped by Mexico City's Museo Nacional de Antropología. Anjani Kumar Singh, the director general of Bihar Museum, expressed a great sense of pride and achievement at the international recognition.
Where History Meets Modern Design
Inaugurated in phases starting from 2015, the Bihar Museum was conceived to provide a modern, expansive home for the state's immense historical treasures, many of which were previously housed at the older Patna Museum. Spread across a sprawling 13-acre campus, the museum itself is an architectural marvel. It was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki in collaboration with Mumbai's Opolis Architects. Rather than a single imposing building, they created a campus-like environment with interconnected galleries, open courtyards, and tranquil green spaces, offering a unique visitor experience that blends indoor and outdoor elements.
A Journey Through Bihar's Glorious Past
The museum's galleries take visitors on a captivating journey through the rich and layered history of Bihar, from ancient civilizations up to the year 1764. The exhibits are arranged chronologically, showcasing priceless artifacts, sculptures, manuscripts, and coins from periods including the Mauryan, Gupta, and Mughal eras. One of its most prized possessions is the Didarganj Yakshi, a masterfully crafted life-sized statue dating back over 2,300 years. The narrative-driven displays move beyond just presenting objects, aiming to tell the fascinating stories of the land that was once the seat of powerful empires like Magadha.
An Experience for All Ages
The Bihar Museum is designed to be an engaging and educational space for everyone. A dedicated Children's Gallery offers an interactive environment where young visitors can explore themes of wildlife, history, and culture through fun, handson activities. The museum also features a Diaspora Gallery, which explores the cultural legacy of Bihar beyond its geographical borders, and galleries for contemporary and regional art. The thoughtful layout and immersive storytelling approach make learning about history an engaging experience rather than a passive walkthrough, earning it a reputation as one of India's finest and bestdesigned museums.
