Planning Your Budget Thai Adventure
A smart Thailand trip begins with planning. For Indian travellers, the visa situation is favourable. As of late 2026, a visa exemption scheme often allows for visa-free entry for tourism, though it's crucial to check the latest rules with the Royal Thai Embassy
before booking. To get the best value, consider travelling during the shoulder seasons—from April to June or September to October—when the weather is still pleasant but flights and hotels are significantly cheaper than during the peak months of November to February. For a Chiang Mai and Krabi trip, an open-jaw ticket (flying into one city and out of the other) can save time and money. Direct flights from Indian metros to Bangkok are plentiful, with budget carriers offering connecting flights to both destinations.
Chiang Mai: Culture in the Cool Mountains (4 Days)
Your first stop is the cultural heart of Northern Thailand. Chiang Mai is best explored at a relaxed pace. Getting around is cheap and easy; the iconic red trucks known as songthaews operate as shared taxis and a ride within the main city area costs around 30-40 Baht. Spend your days exploring the ancient temples within the Old City walls, many of which are free to enter. A must-do is a trip to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the magnificent temple perched on a mountain overlooking the city. For an ethical wildlife experience, visit a reputable elephant sanctuary. Evenings are for food. Head to the North Gate or the famous Sunday Walking Street for incredible street food where a full, delicious meal of Khao Soi (curry noodle soup) or Pad Thai can cost as little as 50-80 Baht.
Finding a Place to Stay in Chiang Mai
Accommodation in Chiang Mai caters to every budget. For the most cost-effective stay, look for guesthouses or hostels located within or just outside the Old City moat. These offer clean, comfortable rooms and the advantage of being within walking distance of major temples, markets, and food stalls. A bed in a dorm can be found for as little as 250-400 Baht per night, while private rooms in budget-friendly guesthouses are also widely available. Booking in advance, especially during the slightly busier shoulder seasons, is always recommended to secure the best rates and locations for your stay.
From Mountains to Sea: Getting to Krabi
The quickest way to travel from the hills of Chiang Mai to the coastal paradise of Krabi is by a direct domestic flight. Airlines like Thai AirAsia operate this route, and the flight takes approximately two hours. Booking this flight a few months in advance can land you a one-way ticket for a very reasonable price. Upon arrival at Krabi Airport, you can take a shared shuttle bus to Ao Nang, the most popular base for tourists, for around 150 Baht. Ao Nang offers a wide range of budget accommodations and is the launchpad for most island-hopping adventures.
Krabi: Beaches and Islands on a Budget (4 Days)
Krabi is all about its dramatic limestone karsts and stunning coastline. The key to enjoying it on a budget is to embrace local transport and tours. Instead of expensive speedboats, opt for the traditional long-tail boats for island hopping. A popular 'Four Islands Tour' can be booked from numerous vendors in Ao Nang and offers a full day of snorkelling and beach-hopping for a fraction of the cost of private tours. Spend a day exploring the breathtaking Railay Beach, accessible only by a short long-tail boat ride from Ao Nang for about 100 Baht. For a free but challenging activity, climb the 1,237 steps to the Tiger Cave Temple for panoramic views of the entire region. When it comes to food, avoid the tourist-trap restaurants on the main beach road and venture into the side streets for authentic and affordable Thai cuisine.
