A New Era for Regional Connectivity
The Railway Board has officially greenlit the new Surat-Udaipur City Vande Bharat Express, a move celebrated as a significant infrastructure milestone for South Gujarat. This marks the first time a Vande Bharat service will originate and terminate in Surat,
directly linking the commercial powerhouse with Rajasthan's iconic 'City of Lakes'. The new train, assigned numbers 26903 for the Surat to Udaipur journey and 26904 for the return, will be operated and maintained by the Western Railway zone. This service effectively extends a premium travel corridor, as it replaces and upgrades the previous Udaipur-Asarva (Ahmedabad) Vande Bharat service, which will be discontinued. The decision provides a much-anticipated direct link for business travellers, tourists, and families, strengthening ties between the two major economic and cultural centres.
The All-Important Schedule and Route
Designed for convenience, the train will run six days a week, taking a break only on Tuesdays. Departing from Surat at a business-friendly time of 6:10 AM, train 26903 is scheduled to arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM the same day. For the return journey, train 26904 will leave Udaipur at 3:35 PM and pull into Surat at 11:00 PM. The total travel time is pegged at approximately seven hours and 30 minutes, a significant improvement over road travel. The route includes nine strategic commercial halts, ensuring wider connectivity across the region. Stops include Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar, before reaching the final destination.
What This Means for Surat and South Gujarat
The introduction of this service is more than just a new train; it's a major boost for the region's economy. For Surat's thriving diamond and textile industries, it offers a faster and more comfortable mode of transport for business dealings in Rajasthan. Furthermore, it is expected to significantly bolster tourism, making it easier for residents of South Gujarat to visit popular destinations in and around Udaipur, and vice versa. The service is also a boon for the thousands who travel for social functions, including the many destination weddings hosted in Udaipur. Local leaders have hailed the train as an important gift to Surat, enhancing its stature as a key urban centre and providing a new premium travel option for its citizens.
Inside the Vande Bharat Experience
The Surat-Udaipur service will utilize an eight-coach Vande Bharat rake, known for its focus on passenger comfort, speed, and safety. These indigenously designed trainsets can reach a maximum speed of 160 kmph and represent a significant leap in Indian rail technology. Passengers can expect modern amenities such as comfortable seating, smoother rides, and upgraded onboard facilities. The train's primary maintenance will be handled at a dedicated facility in Surat, cementing the city's role in the new service's operations. With watering facilities planned at Vadodara and Asarva, the logistical framework is set for a smooth and efficient run. The launch is eagerly anticipated before the Navratri festival, aiming to cater to the festive travel rush.
