The Sleep, Exercise, and Longevity Link
It's well-established that both regular physical activity and adequate sleep are pillars of a long, healthy life. When either is lacking, health risks can increase. A recent study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology sought to understand
how these two factors interact. Using data from over 92,000 adults who wore activity-tracking wristbands, researchers objectively measured physical activity levels and sleep duration—classifying sleep as short (under six hours), normal (six to eight hours), or long (over eight hours). The goal was to see if getting enough exercise could offset the documented mortality risks associated with poor sleep. The findings suggest that physical activity can indeed weaken the dangers of getting too little or too much sleep.
An Edge for Afternoon and Evening Workouts
The most compelling finding relates to those with unhealthy sleep patterns. The study revealed that for people with short or long sleep durations, exercising in the afternoon or evening was associated with the lowest risk of early death from any cause, as well as from cardiovascular disease. Specifically, for short sleepers, a low volume of exercise was linked to a 69% higher risk of cardiovascular death, a risk that vanished when exercise levels increased to moderate or high volumes. This suggests that if your sleep is compromised, shifting your workout to later in the day might provide a significant compensatory health benefit, effectively counteracting some of the negative effects of poor rest. This could be because late-day exercise aligns better with the body's internal clock, or circadian rhythm, especially when sleep patterns are disrupted.
What About Morning Exercise?
While morning workouts have long been praised for their ability to regulate sleep-wake cycles and boost energy for the day, the new findings offer a more nuanced perspective. For individuals who already maintain a healthy sleep schedule (six to eight hours per night), the timing of their exercise did not appear to significantly change their mortality risk. Morning, midday, or evening workouts all offered protective benefits. However, for those with poor sleep, the protective benefits of morning exercise appeared to be less pronounced compared to later workouts. This does not mean morning workouts are not beneficial; they are proven to improve mood, reduce stress, and promote deeper sleep over time. The key difference seems to be the added buffering effect against mortality risk that later exercise provides specifically for poor sleepers.
Why Does Timing Make a Difference?
Researchers don't have a definitive answer, but several biological mechanisms are likely at play. Physical activity is known to improve blood glucose regulation, lower inflammation, and reduce stress—all of which can be negatively impacted by poor sleep. Exercising later in the day might help manage these issues more effectively. For instance, an afternoon workout can help process blood sugar after lunch and lower blood pressure. As your core body temperature, which rises during exercise, begins to fall a few hours later, it signals to your brain that it's time to wind down for sleep. This process can help stabilize your mood and decompress the mind, facilitating a natural transition to sleep, even when your internal clock is off-kilter.
The 'Best' Exercise is the One You Do
While this research offers valuable insight for optimizing your routine, experts caution against becoming too rigid. The most important factor for long-term health remains consistency. Any physical activity is dramatically better than none. If the only time you can fit in a workout is in the morning, you should absolutely do it. The benefits of regular exercise—from improved mood and energy to better management of chronic conditions—are immense, regardless of timing. Think of this study not as a strict rule, but as a potential strategy to gain an extra edge if your schedule is flexible and your sleep is often lacking. Listening to your body is key; some people feel energized by evening workouts, while others find it interferes with their ability to fall asleep.
