The Five Upgraded Train Services
The initiative targets two premium Vande Bharat Express trains and three other crucial long-distance services. According to the Northeast Frontier Railway, the upgraded services are now active on the following routes: New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express (22233/22234),
New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati Vande Bharat Express (22227/22228), Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express (12518/12517), Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express (15946/15945), and the Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express (12552/12551). The rollout was completed by mid-October 2026, making NFR the second zonal railway to implement this modern approach to passenger service.
A New Era of Cleanliness and Hygiene
The core of this upgrade is a significant improvement in onboard cleanliness. Passengers can expect more frequent and thorough cleaning of coaches throughout their journey. Special attention is being given to washroom maintenance to ensure higher standards of hygiene. This includes regular upkeep of toilets and ensuring water availability. The new system also focuses on efficient waste management to keep coach areas clean and tidy. These enhancements are a direct response to the need for better hygiene on long-haul trips, a common point of feedback from travellers.
Technology-Driven Monitoring and Accountability
What makes this initiative different is its reliance on technology to ensure standards are met. The system incorporates digital monitoring, staff tracking, and geo-tagged service verification to create a new level of accountability. For the first time on these routes, AI-based assessments will be used to check if cleaning has been done properly. This means that cleaning staff will be monitored not just by supervisors, but by a digital system that verifies their work. This technology-first approach aims to eliminate gaps in service and ensure a consistently clean environment for all passengers.
Faster Complaint Resolution and Passenger Feedback
A major benefit for passengers is a more responsive system for addressing complaints. Dedicated onboard teams are now tasked with handling housekeeping issues and providing basic technical assistance. Northeast Frontier Railway has set a target to resolve passenger complaints within two hours. Any issue that cannot be fixed within this timeframe will be automatically escalated to higher authorities. Furthermore, the system is designed to collect real-time passenger feedback and star ratings, allowing railway officials to evaluate performance continuously and make necessary improvements.
Improved Comfort and Amenities
Beyond cleanliness, the upgrades also touch upon overall passenger comfort. This includes the timely distribution and collection of fresh bed linen for overnight journeys, a simple but crucial element of a comfortable trip. The regular cleaning of AC windows also contributes to a more pleasant travel atmosphere. While this particular initiative focuses heavily on housekeeping and hygiene, it is part of a broader push by Indian Railways to modernise its fleet. Other recent announcements have included plans for upgraded interiors, better seats, and improved amenities on Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi trains, signaling a network-wide focus on elevating the passenger experience.
