alerts are not just about how much rain will fall, but what impact that rain is likely to have on daily life, transport, and safety. For travellers, the IMD's website and its official mobile apps, such as 'Mausam', are the most reliable sources for forecasts and live warnings. These alerts are designed to be simple and actionable, helping you make smarter decisions whether you're planning a weekend getaway or navigating a city during a downpour.
Green Alert: All Is Well
A Green alert is the most straightforward: it means 'No Warning'. When you see a green alert for your destination, you can be confident that no severe weather is expected that would disrupt your plans. This signifies normal weather conditions, which during the monsoon could mean light, scattered showers or even dry spells. For travel planning, a Green alert is a go-ahead. You can proceed with your itinerary, including outdoor activities and road travel, without any significant weather-related worries. It’s the ideal forecast for a hassle-free monsoon trip.
Yellow Alert: Be Aware
A Yellow alert is a 'Watch' or a signal to 'Be Aware'. It's the IMD’s way of saying that weather conditions are likely to change and could cause some disruption. This alert is typically issued for expected rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm over a 24-hour period. For travellers, a Yellow alert is not a reason to cancel, but a prompt to be cautious. It means you should monitor the forecast closely before and during your trip. You might face minor travel delays, traffic congestion, or waterlogging on some roads. It’s wise to build some buffer time into your schedule and double-check your route, especially if you are heading to hilly areas where even moderate rain can increase risks.
Orange Alert: Be Prepared
An Orange alert means 'Be Prepared' and should be taken seriously. It is issued when extremely bad weather is expected, with a high potential for significant disruption. This often involves forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall, between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm. An Orange alert signals a strong likelihood of travel disruptions, including road and rail closures, flight delays, and power outages. For travellers, this is a strong warning to reconsider your plans. The risk of landslides in hilly regions and significant flooding in low-lying areas and cities increases dramatically. If you are already at your destination, it is best to avoid non-essential travel and stay away from overflowing rivers or streams. If you haven't left yet, postponing your trip might be the safest option.
Red Alert: Take Action
A Red alert is the highest level of warning, meaning 'Take Action'. It is reserved for extremely severe weather conditions that pose a significant threat to life and property. This alert is issued when rainfall is expected to exceed 204.5 mm in 24 hours, leading to a high risk of widespread flooding, major landslides, and extensive damage to infrastructure. Under a Red alert, widespread travel and power disruptions are almost guaranteed. The official advice is to avoid all non-essential travel and follow the instructions of local disaster management authorities. If a Red alert is issued for your destination, you should cancel or postpone your trip without hesitation. Prioritising safety is paramount, and travel under these conditions is extremely hazardous.
Context Is Everything
Finally, remember that the impact of a weather warning depends heavily on your location's geography. An Orange alert for heavy rain in a city like Mumbai might mean severe waterlogging and traffic chaos. The same alert for a hill station in Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand could signify a high risk of life-threatening landslides and road blockages. Before you travel, always consider the local terrain. Are you staying near a river that could swell? Is your route known for being vulnerable to disruptions?
