During peak season, the main waterways can feel like highways, with houseboats creating traffic jams that can diminish the sense of tranquility. The cost is also a significant factor, with overnight cruises often being one of the most expensive parts of a Kerala trip.
Munroe Island: The Hidden Gem
About 80 kilometres south, near Kollam, lies Munroe Island, or Mundrothuruthu. It is a cluster of eight small islands at the confluence of the Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River. Unlike Alleppey's wide channels, Munroe is defined by a maze of impossibly narrow canals, shaded by coconut palms and mangrove arches. These tiny waterways are inaccessible to the large houseboats, which immediately sets a different pace. The island, named after British Resident Colonel John Munroe, feels like a step back in time, offering what many describe as a more authentic and peaceful backwater experience. It’s a place that has long been popular with international backpackers seeking a laid-back vibe but is now gaining wider recognition.

For many travellers, the difference in cost is staggering and becomes the primary reason to choose Munroe Island. An overnight stay on a basic deluxe houseboat in Alleppey can easily cost between ₹7,000 and ₹10,000, with premium and luxury options soaring much higher. In contrast, the quintessential Munroe Island experience is a serene canoe tour through its narrow canals, which can cost as little as ₹500 per hour. Accommodation follows the same pattern. While Alleppey has its share of resorts, Munroe’s tourism is built around homestays, where you can get a room for ₹1,000 to ₹1,500, often including a home-cooked breakfast. For the cost of a single night on a mid-range Alleppey houseboat, a traveller could potentially spend several days exploring, eating, and sleeping on Munroe Island.
The Experience: Crowds vs. Calm
Beyond the budget, the vibe of the two destinations is worlds apart. Alleppey is a well-oiled tourism machine, which offers convenience but also brings crowds. Munroe Island’s main offering is tranquility. The primary mode of transport here is the non-motorised canoe, an eco-friendly way to explore that allows you to hear the sounds of nature and village life without the chug of a diesel engine. A canoe ride here is an intimate journey through narrow waterways, passing by local homes, watching villagers go about their day, and gliding under low-slung footbridges. This is slow travel at its best, offering a much closer and more personal glimpse into the backwater ecosystem and the communities that call it home.
A Word of Caution: The Fragile Paradise
While Munroe Island sounds idyllic, it is crucial for visitors to be aware of its fragile environmental situation. The island has been grappling with serious issues of land subsidence, with parts of it gradually sinking. This phenomenon, worsened by factors like the 2004 tsunami and upstream dam construction, causes tidal flooding and increased saltwater intrusion, affecting homes and agriculture. Many local families have been forced to leave, becoming some of Kerala’s first climate refugees. Tourism, when practised responsibly through eco-friendly tours and homestays that directly benefit the community, is seen as a potential lifeline. Travellers choosing Munroe Island should do so with a gentle footprint, understanding the delicate balance of this beautiful but threatened landscape.
