The Ground Rules: AI Is Your Co-Pilot, Not the Pilot
Before diving into prompts, it's critical to set the stage. The quality of AI-generated content depends entirely on the quality of the information you provide. Think of AI as a powerful assistant that can analyse, rewrite, and optimise, but it cannot
invent your experience. Always start with your master resume and the specific job description for the role you're targeting. The goal is not to have AI write your resume from scratch, but to help you strategically refine what’s already there. Never copy and paste AI output blindly; review every suggestion to ensure it is accurate, reflects your true experience, and sounds like you. A generic, robotic resume is easy for recruiters to spot and reject.
Prompt 1: The Keyword & Gap Analysis
Your first step is to understand what the employer wants. Most companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes, making keyword alignment crucial. This prompt turns the AI into a recruiter, scanning the job description for the most important requirements and comparing them against your resume. Template: "Act as a resume editor. Compare my resume below with the provided job description. Identify: 1. The top 10 most important keywords and skills from the job description. 2. Keywords and required skills that are present in the job description but missing from my resume. 3. Skills I have that are relevant but not sufficiently highlighted. Organise the results in a table for clarity. [PASTE YOUR FULL RESUME HERE] [PASTE THE FULL JOB DESCRIPTION HERE]"
Prompt 2: Rewriting Bullet Points for Impact
This is where the magic happens. Vague responsibilities get transformed into compelling, achievement-oriented bullet points. A great formula to use is Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]. This prompt helps you apply that structure. Template: "Using the keywords and skills identified earlier, rewrite the following bullet points from my resume to be more achievement-oriented. For each one, start with a strong action verb and include a quantifiable result where possible. Do not invent facts. If a metric is missing, use a placeholder like [add metric here]. TARGET KEYWORDS: [List 3-5 keywords from the previous step] ORIGINAL BULLETS: - [Paste your original bullet point 1] - [Paste your original bullet point 2] - [Paste your original bullet point 3]"
Prompt 3: Quantifying Your Achievements
Numbers tell a powerful story. Resumes with quantified achievements are significantly more likely to catch a recruiter's eye. But what if you don't have exact figures? AI can help you brainstorm potential metrics or frame your accomplishments in a way that demonstrates scale. Template: "Review the following bullet point from my resume. Suggest three ways to add a quantifiable metric (e.g., percentage, monetary value, time saved, volume). If exact numbers aren't available, suggest how to use conservative estimates, ranges, or scope indicators (like team size or budget managed) to show impact. BULLET POINT: [Paste a bullet point that feels weak, e.g., 'Managed the team's social media channels.']"
Prompt 4: Translating Experience for a Career Change
When switching industries, you need to show how your past skills apply to your future role. This prompt helps you identify and frame those valuable transferable skills. Template: "I am changing careers from [Your Old Field] to [Your New Field]. Based on my resume and the target job description below, identify my top 3 transferable skills. Then, rewrite my experience summary to bridge my past experience with my new career goals, framing my background as a unique advantage. [PASTE YOUR RESUME HERE] [PASTE TARGET JOB DESCRIPTION HERE]"
Prompt 5: The Final Polish and Tone Check
After tailoring your bullet points, a final check is essential to ensure your resume flows well and has a consistent, professional tone. This prompt asks the AI to act as a final proofreader, catching repetition and robotic phrasing. Template: "Review the following resume bullet points. Check for repetitive action verbs, passive language, and jargon. Suggest alternative phrasing to make the language more concise, confident, and clear to a recruiter outside of my industry. Ensure the tone is professional but still sounds human. [PASTE YOUR NEWLY-EDITED BULLET POINTS HERE]"
