Verify the Seller’s Credibility
The first rule of bulk buying is to know your source. Always prioritise purchasing from official brand websites or authorised retailers. The booming e-commerce market in India has made it easier for unverified sellers on social media and third-party marketplaces
to offer counterfeit goods. Before you buy, search for reviews of the seller, and ensure they provide clear contact information and a physical address. Legitimate businesses are transparent, while counterfeit sellers often operate anonymously, leaving you with no recourse if something goes wrong.
If the Price Is Too Good to Be True, It Is
A massive discount on a premium product is a major red flag. Counterfeit products are produced in unregulated conditions using cheap, often dangerous ingredients, which allows them to be sold at a fraction of the authentic item's price. While festive sales offer genuine discounts, be wary of prices that are drastically lower than what's offered by official retailers. These deals often point towards fake products that can be ineffective at best and harmful at worst.
Scrutinise the Packaging with a Keen Eye
Counterfeiters have become skilled at imitation, but there are often tell-tale signs of a fake. Carefully examine the product’s packaging for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, or blurry, low-quality printing. Compare the logo, font, and colour scheme with images on the brand's official website. Authentic products feature high-quality, sturdy packaging, whereas fakes may feel flimsy or have ill-fitting components. Also check for safety seals; a missing or broken seal is a clear warning sign.
Never Skip the Manufacturing and Expiry Dates
This is especially crucial when buying in bulk. Under Indian law, all cosmetics must display a manufacturing date (MFD) and an expiry date (EXP). Unopened cosmetics generally have a shelf life of two to three years. Also, look for the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol—an open jar icon with a number like "12M," indicating the product is good for 12 months after opening. Since you won't be using all your bulk items at once, ensuring a long shelf life is key to avoiding waste and potential skin issues from expired products.
Know What You're Putting on Your Skin
The danger of fake cosmetics lies in their unknown ingredients. Counterfeit products have been found to contain hazardous substances like mercury, lead, arsenic, and even bacteria due to being made in unsanitary conditions. These can cause severe allergic reactions, skin infections, pigmentation, and long-term health problems. In India, it's mandatory for the full ingredient list to be visible on the product label and, for online purchases, on the product page before you buy. Always read this list carefully.
Understand the Return and Refund Policy
Before finalising a large purchase, review the seller's return and refund policy. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019, provides rights to consumers against defective or counterfeit goods. E-commerce platforms are required to appoint a grievance officer and have a clear policy for returns and refunds. However, be aware that many retailers do not accept returns on opened cosmetics for hygiene reasons, which makes all the pre-purchase checks listed above even more important.
