The long journey from Bengaluru to Goa is getting a major upgrade. Indian Railways has approved a new Vande Bharat Express service, slashing travel time and making the popular coastal escape more accessible than ever for weekend trips and holidays.
A New Vande Bharat Connection
Indian
Railways is set to launch a new Vande Bharat Express directly connecting Yesvantpur in Bengaluru to Madgaon in Goa. The Railway Board approved the new service on October 30, 2026, creating a much-anticipated, faster link between the tech hub and the tourist hotspot. This new train, operating under numbers 26655 and 26656, is expected to begin service in the third week of November 2026. The journey from Yesvantpur to Madgaon is scheduled to take approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes, a significant reduction from previous travel times. The return journey from Madgaon to Yesvantpur is even quicker, estimated at 12 hours and 55 minutes.
Route, Schedule, and Stops
The new service is designed as a convenient daytime journey. Train number 26655 will depart from Yesvantpur at 7:35 am and arrive in Madgaon at 8:55 pm. It will run six days a week, with no service on Wednesdays. The return train, number 26656, will leave Madgaon at 8:20 am and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 pm, operating six days a week, excluding Thursdays. The route will travel via Mangaluru Junction and includes 12 key stops, connecting several towns in Karnataka's interior and coastal belts before reaching Goa. Major halts include Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar, offering new direct connectivity for many passengers.
The Scenic Journey Through the Ghats
One of the most attractive features of this new route is the journey itself. The train will pass through the stunning Sakleshpur to Subrahmanya Road section, which cuts through the dense forests and rolling hills of the Western Ghats. Passengers can expect panoramic views of the region's lush green landscapes, valleys, and bridges, turning the travel experience into a scenic tour. This makes the train not just a mode of transport but a part of the holiday itself, appealing to tourists and nature lovers looking to soak in the beauty of one of India's most biodiverse regions.
How Has the Journey Become Faster?
The significant reduction in travel time is primarily due to major infrastructure upgrades, particularly the electrification of the railway lines. The completion of electrification on the Bengaluru–Mangaluru route in late 2025 allows electric locomotives to run continuously, eliminating time–consuming engine changes that were previously required. Electric trains offer higher speeds, better acceleration, and greater operational efficiency compared to their diesel counterparts. These infrastructure improvements, part of a broader push by Indian Railways to modernise its network, are what make faster services like the Vande Bharat Express possible on such routes.
Planning Your Trip
The new service will be a chair car Vande Bharat Express. With the launch expected in mid–November, travellers should keep an eye out for the official announcement from Indian Railways, which will include the final launch date and fare details. This new train replaces the existing Madgaon–Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat service, which will be discontinued. For those who previously drove or took overnight buses, this train offers a comfortable, safe, and scenic daytime alternative that gets you from the heart of Bengaluru to the beaches of Goa in a single day, arriving just in time for a late dinner.
