of links it deems relevant. For verification, its strength lies in transparency. It doesn't give you one 'answer'; it gives you many potential sources. This forces the user to engage in critical evaluation. You can compare reports from multiple news outlets, check primary documents, and assess the credibility of each source yourself. Tools like 'About this result' provide context on the website you're about to visit, helping you decide if it's a trustworthy source before you even click.
The New Contender: AI Search
AI search, including features like Google's AI Overviews or platforms like Perplexity, operates differently. Instead of giving you a list of links, it uses a Large Language Model (LLM) to synthesize information from multiple sources and generate a single, direct answer in conversational language. The promise is efficiency: you get a summary of what you need to know without having to click through ten different tabs. When it works well, it can provide citations that link back to the original source material, seemingly blending the best of both worlds. This approach is designed for speed and convenience, aiming to answer your question in one go.
The Problem of 'Hallucinations'
The biggest weakness of AI search for verification is a phenomenon known as 'hallucination'. An AI doesn't 'know' things; it predicts the next most likely word based on statistical patterns in its training data. This means it can confidently state falsehoods, invent statistics, or even fabricate citations for studies that don't exist. These outputs can sound plausible but be factually wrong or entirely made up. While engineers are working to reduce this, it's an inherent part of how current generative AI works and cannot be fully eliminated. For the specific task of verifying information, traditional Google Search remains superior. Its core function is to lead you to primary and secondary sources, putting the crucial step of evaluation in your hands. AI search, by design, tries to do this work for you, but its susceptibility to hallucination means you cannot blindly trust its summary. In fact, a common user behaviour that has emerged is the 'hybrid journey': people start with an AI search for a quick overview but then turn to traditional Google to verify the facts, prices, or sources. Studies have shown that a high percentage of users still use Google to fact-check AI-generated answers, highlighting a significant trust gap.
The Smartest Strategy: Use Both
The most effective approach isn't to pick one tool and discard the other, but to use them for their respective strengths. AI search can be a fantastic starting point for research. Use it to quickly understand a complex topic, generate keywords, or get a summarized overview. But once you have the AI-generated answer, your work isn't done. Take the core claims and use traditional Google Search to find the original sources.
