Vehicle Health and Documentation
Before you even think about playlists, give your car a thorough check-up, ideally a week before your departure. This isn't just about filling the tank. Check the engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid levels. Inspect your tyres, including the spare,
for adequate tread depth and pressure. A visit to a mechanic for a once-over on brakes, suspension, and battery health can prevent the most common causes of roadside breakdowns. Equally important are your documents. Ensure your driving licence, RC, insurance, and Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate are all valid and easily accessible. Having both original documents and digital copies can save you a lot of hassle during police checks, which are common at state borders.
Route, Navigation, and Connectivity
Modern navigation apps have made route planning easier, but Indian highways can be unpredictable. Don't just plan for the shortest route; consider the road conditions. Major national highways are generally smooth, but state highways or rural roads can be a mixed bag. It's wise to download offline maps on an app like Google Maps, as mobile networks can be unreliable in hilly or remote areas. A good car phone holder is a must for safe navigation. Beyond the route itself, plan your breaks for meals and fuel. A fully charged power bank is non-negotiable to keep your devices running, especially if you're relying on them for maps and communication.
Food, Hydration, and Accommodation
While the allure of highway dhabas is strong, it's smart to have a plan for meals and hydration. Pack a supply of non-perishable snacks like nuts or energy bars and carry several litres of drinking water. This is crucial for staying hydrated, especially in summer, and gives you options if you find yourself on a long stretch without good food stops. If it’s a multi-day trip, booking accommodation in advance is highly recommended, particularly during peak travel seasons. Having printed copies of your hotel bookings can be a lifesaver if your phone battery dies. This planning prevents the stress of finding a decent place to stay after a long day of driving.
Emergency Preparedness
No one plans for an emergency, but everyone should prepare for one. A well-stocked first-aid kit is essential, containing basics like bandages, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, and any personal prescription medications. Your car should also have an emergency kit with a proper toolkit, a functional jack, jumper cables, and reflective warning triangles. Familiarise yourself with how to change a tyre before you leave. Furthermore, it is worth looking into a roadside assistance (RSA) plan. Companies like Allianz Assistance, HRA, and others offer services across India, including towing, on-site minor repairs, and flat tyre assistance, which can be invaluable when you're stranded in an unfamiliar place.
Comfort and Miscellaneous Items
Finally, think about the small things that enhance comfort and convenience. A small trash bag helps keep your car clean, as roadside bins can be scarce. Wet wipes, hand sanitiser, and tissues are always useful. For entertainment, especially on long stretches, curated playlists or podcasts can make the drive much more enjoyable. If you're travelling through regions with significant temperature changes, like from the plains to the hills, pack layers of clothing. A good pair of sunglasses, sunscreen, and a travel pillow can also make a world of difference to your comfort on the road.
