Start With Smart Skin Prep
The secret to makeup that lasts through humidity begins before you even touch a foundation bottle. During the monsoon, your skin faces a unique challenge: the air is moist, but your skin can still get dehydrated or, conversely, become an oil slick. Start
with a gentle, oil-controlling cleanser to remove any excess sebum. Follow this with a lightweight, water-based or gel moisturiser. Heavy creams can make your base makeup slide right off in humid conditions. This simple prep step creates a balanced, hydrated canvas that grips makeup better and for longer.
Prime, But Only Where You Need It
A primer is non-negotiable during the rainy season. It creates a barrier between your skin’s oils and your makeup, preventing it from breaking down. However, you don't need to slather it all over your face. For a more natural and effective approach, apply a mattifying, humidity-proof primer only to the areas that tend to get oily, such as your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). This targeted application controls shine where it matters most without making the rest of your face feel heavy or look flat.
Lighten Your Base
The biggest mistake many people make in humid weather is caking on a heavy foundation. The opposite is actually more effective. Thick layers of makeup are more likely to melt, crease, and look patchy. Instead, opt for lightweight formulas. Tinted moisturisers, BB creams, or even just a strategically applied concealer are excellent choices. If you must wear foundation, choose a water-based or powder foundation formula, which holds up better in damp conditions than oil-based ones. Apply it in thin layers, pressing it into the skin with a damp sponge rather than buffing, to create a more durable, skin-like finish.
Embrace Waterproof Wonders
This might seem obvious, but it’s the most crucial swap you can make for your monsoon makeup kit. From mascara to eyeliner and kajal, switching to waterproof versions will save you from the dreaded 'raccoon eyes' after a sudden shower or just a long, sweaty day. Waterproof formulas are specifically designed to resist moisture and will not smudge, run, or fade when they come into contact with water or sweat. This ensures your eye makeup stays crisp and defined, no matter what the weather throws at you.
Powder Over Creams for Colour
While cream blushes and bronzers are popular for their dewy finish, they can be problematic during the monsoon. Cream formulas tend to move and streak in high humidity. Powder blushes, bronzers, and highlighters are a safer bet. They help absorb excess oil and have better staying power on a set base. Choose finely milled powders that give you a good colour payoff without needing too many layers. This will give you a fresh, healthy flush that stays put all day.
Set It and Forget It
After applying your base and colour, setting your makeup is a critical final step. Use a translucent setting powder to lock everything in, focusing on the T-zone and under the eyes to prevent creasing. Don't be afraid to 'bake' by letting the powder sit for a few minutes before dusting off the excess. This technique absorbs any excess oil and creates a seriously budge-proof finish. Finally, a few spritzes of a good quality makeup setting spray will act like a seal, locking your entire look in place and providing an extra layer of protection against humidity.
Choose Matte, Transfer-Proof Lips
Glossy or creamy lipsticks are notorious for bleeding and transferring in humid weather. For a pout that lasts, switch to matte formulas. Liquid matte lipsticks, in particular, dry down to a transfer-proof finish that can withstand sipping on a hot cup of chai or getting caught in a drizzle. Lip tints or stains are another excellent option, as they colour the lips without leaving a heavy layer of product on top. To increase longevity even further, line and fill your entire lip with a lip liner before applying your lipstick.
