A Golden Path for Tourists
Imagine strolling down a path that glitters with pure gold. That's the experience Dubai plans to offer with its latest headline-grabbing project. The Dubai Gold District has announced that the world's first and longest walkway constructed with 24-carat
gold is on track to open within the next two months. Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director at the district, confirmed the ambitious project is designed to create a distinctive new tourist experience. While details about the walkway's exact length and the amount of gold being used are still under wraps, the announcement signals a major new attraction for one of the city's most famous trading hubs. The idea is to offer visitors a chance to literally walk on gold, creating an unforgettable photo opportunity and deepening the connection between Dubai and the precious metal it's famous for trading.
The New Dubai Gold District
This shimmering walkway is the star feature of the recently established Dubai Gold District, a major initiative launched in January 2026 to modernize and expand the area around the traditional Gold Souk in Deira. Developed by Ithra Dubai, the district is not replacing the old souk but rather enhancing it, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for the gold and jewellery industry. It consolidates over 1,000 retailers, wholesale traders, bullion dealers, and investment services into a single, purpose-built destination. The project aims to blend retail with tourism, providing a seamless experience for both businesses and shoppers exploring the city's rich heritage in gold trading.
Revitalizing a Historic Hub
The Gold District and its walkway are central components of the much larger Deira Enrichment Project. This master plan by developer Ithra Dubai aims to rejuvenate Dubai's oldest commercial centre, transforming it into a vibrant, modern destination while preserving its unique cultural character. The project introduces modern infrastructure to the historic area, including new residential apartments, offices, hotels, and crucial amenities like enhanced public transport links and over 8,500 parking spaces. For visitors, this means a more comfortable and connected experience, with shaded walkways, smart signage, and better facilities elevating the traditional charm of the souk.
A Sign of a Booming Market
The investment in such a lavish attraction reflects the robust health of Dubai's gold market. The Dubai Gold District has reported significant growth since the start of 2026, with a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new retail stores for jewellery, precious stones, and luxury watches. This expansion is driving demand for more commercial space within the district. The walkway is part of a broader strategy to solidify Dubai's standing as a leading global hub for gold, which includes plans for a major exhibition intended to be the largest of its kind in the Middle East.
