Think of your body as having a built-in air conditioner. Its primary cooling mechanism is sweating. As perspiration evaporates from your skin, it carries heat away, lowering your body temperature. This process, known as thermoregulation, is crucial for
falling asleep. As your body prepares for rest, its core temperature naturally needs to drop by about one to two degrees. However, high humidity throws a wrench in this system. Monsoon air is already saturated with water vapour, meaning your sweat has nowhere to go. It can't evaporate efficiently, leaving you feeling damp, sticky, and overheated. Your body's cooling engine stalls, making it much harder to achieve the temperature drop needed to initiate deep and restorative sleep.
The Disruption of Essential Sleep Stages
This struggle to cool down directly interferes with your sleep architecture. Studies show that humid heat increases wakefulness and reduces the time spent in the most crucial stages of sleep: slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. SWS, or deep sleep, is vital for physical recovery, including tissue repair and immune system support. REM sleep is essential for memory consolidation and emotional regulation. When your body is too warm, it remains in a state of higher alertness, leading to more frequent awakenings throughout the night. Even if you don't fully wake up, these micro-arousals fragment your sleep, which is why you can spend a full eight hours in bed and still wake up feeling exhausted and unrefreshed.
An Unwelcome Environment for Breathing
High humidity doesn't just make you feel hot; it can also make the air feel heavy and harder to breathe. Beyond the discomfort, the damp conditions of the monsoon create an ideal breeding ground for allergens like mould, mildew, and dust mites. These allergens can thrive in mattresses, bedding, and poorly ventilated corners of a room. For many people, especially those with asthma or allergies, inhaling these irritants can trigger respiratory issues like congestion, coughing, and wheezing, further disrupting any chance of a peaceful night's rest. This creates a double-edged sword: not only are you too warm to sleep, but the very air you're breathing might be working against you.
How to Reclaim Your Restful Nights
While you can't change the weather, you can control your immediate sleep environment. The ideal indoor humidity for sleeping is generally between 40% and 60%. Using a dehumidifier can be one of the most effective ways to lower the moisture content in your bedroom air. Improving air circulation is also key; use a ceiling or standing fan to help sweat evaporate and prevent a pocket of hot, moist air from forming around you as you sleep. Opt for lightweight, breathable bedding made from natural fibres like cotton or linen, which help wick moisture away from your skin. Finally, consider a lukewarm shower before bed. While a cold shower might seem intuitive, it can cause your body to conserve heat. A lukewarm shower helps to lower your core body temperature more effectively, signalling to your brain that it's time for sleep.
