The New Currency of Cool
For many in Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, the ultimate status symbol isn’t a designer handbag or a flashy car—it's a rich collection of memories. In an era dominated by social media, experiences have become a new form of social currency. A
trip to a music festival or a scuba diving course provides unique, shareable content that helps build a personal brand and social identity. This digital-first generation values authenticity and storytelling, and a weekend getaway offers a far more compelling narrative than a shopping haul. Reports show that a vast majority of Indian consumers, driven by younger demographics, now prefer spending on experiences over products. This shift is so significant that spending on experiences like travel and events is projected to outpace spending on physical goods in India by 2030.
Economic Realities and Redefined Goals
This preference isn't just about social media clout; it’s also rooted in harsh economic realities. With the high cost of living, rising education expenses, and an uncertain job market, traditional markers of wealth like homeownership feel increasingly out of reach for many young Indians. Faced with stagnant wages and high graduate unemployment rates, Gen Z is adapting its financial priorities. Rather than saving for a distant, perhaps unattainable, goal, many are choosing to spend on more immediate and accessible sources of joy. This has led to the rise of the "fun fund," a dedicated budget for travel, concerts, and workshops. This isn’t to say they are financially reckless; reports indicate over 70% of their spending still goes to daily needs and financial commitments, but they are deliberately making room for experiences.
A Search for Authenticity and Connection
Beyond the digital and economic drivers is a profound search for authenticity. Experiences are seen as a way to foster personal growth, create lasting memories, and forge genuine human connections. Unlike material goods, which can be mass-produced, an experience is personal and unique to the individual. This generation shows a strong desire for self-expression and living a life that feels personally satisfying, rather than one defined by external validation or material wealth. The appeal lies in collecting memories that can be cherished for years. This mindset is fuelling India's booming experience economy, with the live events market alone projected to reach ₹13,000 crore.
The Influence of a Digital World
Growing up as digital natives has fundamentally shaped Gen Z's consumer behaviour. Social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube are not just for connecting with friends but are primary tools for discovery and inspiration. Influencers, particularly those who are seen as authentic and relatable, play a significant role in shaping purchase decisions. This generation is drawn to brands that offer personalisation and build a sense of community. They seek immersive and visually distinctive experiences that are, by nature, shareable. This has pushed hotels, travel companies, and event organisers to create curated environments and activities, from cultural gatherings to wellness offerings, that cater to a digitally savvy audience looking for more than just a product or service.
