Choose Your Route and Season
The best time for this coastal drive is between October and March, when the weather is cool and pleasant, offering clear skies and calm seas perfect for sightseeing and beach activities. While the monsoon (June to September) offers lush green landscapes,
it can bring rough seas and potential road disruptions. Your first decision is how to get to Alibaug. You can drive the entire way from Mumbai, a journey of about 95-110 km that takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours, especially with the Atal Setu sea bridge reducing travel time. Alternatively, you can take the M2M Ro-Ro ferry from Mumbai's Bhaucha Dhakka to Mandwa, which allows you to take your car. The ferry journey takes about an hour and is followed by a scenic 30-minute drive to Alibaug, offering a relaxing start to your trip.
First Stop: Alibaug's Beaches and Forts
Alibaug, often called 'mini-Goa', is the perfect first stop. Spend your first day exploring its famous beaches. Alibaug Beach is the main town beach, offering sunset views and access to the historic Kolaba Fort, a 17th-century fortification you can walk to during low tide. For a quieter experience, head to Varsoli or Kihim Beach, the latter being a favorite for birdwatchers. If you're looking for water sports like jet-skiing and banana boat rides, Nagaon Beach is the hub for these activities. Alibaug offers a wide range of stays, from luxury villas to comfortable guesthouses. Be sure to indulge in some authentic Konkani seafood at local eateries like Sanman.
Next Up: Murud and the Unconquered Janjira Fort
From Alibaug, a scenic drive of about 50 km south takes you to the coastal town of Murud. En route, consider a stop at Kashid Beach, renowned for its clean white sand and clear waters. The main attraction in Murud is the formidable Murud-Janjira Fort, an unconquered marine fortress on an island just off the coast. To visit, park at the Rajapuri jetty and take a small sailboat to the fort's entrance. The fort's massive walls, 19 intact bastions, and surprising freshwater lakes make it a historical marvel. After exploring the fort, you can relax at Murud Beach, which is known for being relatively clean and offering stunning sunset views.
The Final Stretch: The Scenic Drive to Ganpatipule
The drive from Murud to Ganpatipule is the longest but arguably the most rewarding part of the journey. The coastal road winds through lush hills and offers breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea. This leg of the trip can take a significant portion of the day, so start early. Ganpatipule is a serene town famous for its 400-year-old Swayambhu Ganpati Temple, which is uniquely located right on the beach. The town is built around the Ganpatipule Beach, a pristine stretch of sand perfect for relaxing walks and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. For panoramic views, you can visit the nearby Jaigad Fort and lighthouse, situated on a cliff overlooking the sea.
Exploring Ganpatipule and the Journey Back
Spend your time in Ganpatipule enjoying the local culture. Visit the Prachin Konkan Museum to get a glimpse of traditional Konkan life. The nearby Aare Ware Beach is a stunning, lesser-known spot formed by two sides of a hill, offering a unique coastal vista. When it comes to food, don't miss out on local delicacies and fresh seafood thalis. Accommodation options range from the popular MTDC resort right on the beach to premium hotels and homestays. Your return journey to Mumbai is a long drive of approximately 340-375 km, taking around 8-9 hours, so plan for an early start or an overnight stop along the way.
