The Allure of a Monsoon Escape
Forget the usual tourist trail. A trip to Coorg, or Kodagu, during the rainy season is an experience for the senses. The air is thick with the petrichor of wet earth mixed with the faint, sweet scent of coffee blossoms. The constant, gentle drizzle provides
a soothing soundtrack, punctuated by the roar of newly awakened waterfalls. This isn't a trip for sunbathing; it's an immersion into nature at its most raw and powerful. The coffee estates, which form the heart of this region, become mystical pathways leading to some of Karnataka’s most spectacular cascades, offering a unique blend of adventure and serenity.
Abbey Falls: A Convenient Cascade
Located just a few kilometres from Madikeri, Abbey Falls (or Abbi Falls) is one of the most accessible and popular waterfalls in Coorg. During the monsoon, it transforms from a pleasant stream into a powerful, thundering force. Nestled amidst private coffee plantations and spice estates, the walk down to the falls is an experience in itself. A hanging bridge offers a magnificent, picture-perfect view of the water crashing down onto the rocks below. Given its popularity, it can get crowded. For a more peaceful experience, try visiting on a weekday morning when the mist is still thick and the crowds are thin. The path can be slippery, so sturdy, waterproof footwear is a must.
Iruppu Falls: The Sacred Plunge
Situated in the Brahmagiri mountain range, Iruppu Falls is not just a natural wonder but also a site of spiritual significance, often referred to as the Lakshmana Tirtha Falls. Legend has it that the falls were created by Lakshmana to quench Rama's thirst. The water is considered sacred, and many pilgrims visit during festive seasons. In the monsoon, the falls are a sight to behold, cascading down a 170-foot drop in two distinct stages. The trek to the falls is a moderate one through a lush forest, part of the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. The journey is as rewarding as the destination, with the sounds of the jungle accompanying your walk. Remember to be mindful of leeches, a common companion during rainy season treks in the Western Ghats.
Chelavara Falls: The Untamed Beauty
For those willing to venture a little off the beaten path, Chelavara Falls offers a more rugged and dramatic experience. This massive, powerful waterfall is one of Coorg’s best-kept secrets, known locally as ‘Embepare’ or tortoise rock. The falls are at their most formidable during the heavy rains, creating a huge, misty spray that can be felt from a distance. The path to the viewpoint can be treacherous and slippery, and getting too close to the falls themselves is highly discouraged due to the strong currents and slippery rocks. However, the view from a safe distance is absolutely breathtaking. It’s the perfect spot for travellers who prefer raw nature over curated tourist spots.
Beyond the Falls: The Plantation Experience
A monsoon trip to Coorg is incomplete without simply embracing the atmosphere of the coffee plantations. Many homestays and resorts are located within these estates, offering you the chance to wake up to misty mornings and the aroma of coffee. Take guided walks through the plantations, where raindrops cling to every leaf and coffee bean. It’s a chance to learn about the coffee-making process, from bean to cup, while being surrounded by an emerald-green canopy. These quiet walks, with nothing but the sound of rain for company, are often the most memorable part of a rainy season escape.
