Thoseghar Falls, Maharashtra
Just a short drive from Satara, the Thoseghar Falls are a series of cascades that come alive spectacularly during the monsoon. The main waterfall plunges from a height of about 200 metres, but what makes this spot special in July is the emergence of several
smaller, seasonal falls that create a panoramic spectacle. A well-maintained viewing platform offers a safe and stunning view of the water roaring into a deep gorge. The area is calm, surrounded by dense woods, making it a perfect monsoon escape for those looking to avoid the commercialised hill stations near Pune and Mumbai. The best time to visit is from July to November, when the falls are at their most powerful and the surrounding landscape is a vibrant green.
Krang Suri Falls, Meghalaya
Often described as one of India's most magical waterfalls, Krang Suri in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya is a sight to behold. While many waterfalls become muddy during the monsoon, Krang Suri is famous for its shimmering, turquoise plunge pool. Although the water is clearest post-monsoon, a July visit offers a powerful, dramatic scene as heavy rains feed the cascade. A short, scenic trek through lush woodlands leads you to this hidden paradise. While swimming might be restricted due to strong currents in peak monsoon, the sheer beauty of the falls, surrounded by the emerald hills, makes it a worthy addition to any travel list. It feels like a secret kept by the hills, rewarding those who make the journey.
Vantawng Falls, Mizoram
As Mizoram's highest and most spectacular waterfall, Vantawng Falls, or Vantawng Khawhthla, is a true hidden gem of the Northeast. This two-tiered waterfall plunges from a height of over 229 metres into the Vanva River near Thenzawl. Surrounded by sheer, densely forested hillsides, getting close to the base is difficult, which adds to its untouched allure. However, a comfortable viewing tower constructed by the tourism department provides a breathtaking vantage point to witness its grandeur. The falls are named after a legendary swimmer named Vantawnga, who was said to be able to hover in the cascading water like a fish. Visiting after the monsoon has begun ensures the waterfall is at its most powerful and awe-inspiring.
Hebbe Falls, Karnataka
For those who enjoy a bit of adventure, Hebbe Falls in Karnataka is the perfect destination. Located deep inside a coffee estate near the hill station of Kemmangundi, reaching this waterfall is part of the experience. The journey involves a thrilling jeep ride through rugged forest terrain followed by a short trek. The waterfall descends in two stages, known as Dodda Hebbe (Big Falls) and Chikka Hebbe (Small Falls), from a height of about 168 metres. During the monsoon, the falls become voluminous, and the sound of the thunderous water can be heard from a distance.
