and cools us down. It’s a natural and effective form of air conditioning. However, high humidity throws a significant wrench into this system. Humidity is the measure of water vapour in the air. When the air is already saturated with moisture, there's little room for the sweat on your skin to evaporate. Instead of vanishing and cooling you, the sweat lingers, leaving you with that familiar sticky, clammy feeling. Your body’s primary cooling mechanism is effectively short-circuited, causing heat to get trapped and making you feel much warmer than the actual air temperature suggests.

A more scientific measure, known as the wet-bulb temperature, also accounts for heat and humidity and indicates the point at which our bodies can no longer cool themselves down. When humidity is high, the heat index can be significantly higher than the number on the thermometer. A 30°C night might feel perfectly pleasant with low humidity, but with high humidity, it can feel more like a sweltering 38°C, leading to restlessness and poor sleep. Night-time can be particularly challenging because even though the sun has set, the moisture content in the air often remains high, especially during monsoon season or in coastal areas.

This isn't just a matter of comfort; it has real health implications. When your body continuously struggles to cool down, it puts extra strain on your cardiovascular system. The heart has to work harder to pump blood to the skin to dissipate heat, which can increase heart rate and blood pressure. For vulnerable individuals, this can pose a serious risk. Furthermore, high humidity can disrupt sleep quality. The discomfort prevents you from reaching the deeper, more restorative stages of sleep. In persistently humid environments, there's also an increased risk of mould and dust mites, which can trigger allergies and respiratory issues like asthma, further complicating a good night's rest.

So, what can be done to combat humid nights and finally get some rest? The goal is to either reduce the humidity in your room or enhance your body's ability to cool itself. An air conditioner is effective because it both cools and dehumidifies the air. If you don't have one, a dehumidifier is a great alternative for pulling moisture out of your bedroom. Good air circulation is also key. Using a ceiling fan or a stand fan helps promote sweat evaporation, even in a humid room. You can enhance a fan's cooling power by placing a bowl of ice in front of it to create a refreshingly cool breeze. Choosing the right bedding and sleepwear can also make a world of difference. Opt for light, breathable natural fabrics like cotton or linen that wick moisture away from the skin.
Simple Habits for Better Sleep
A few simple changes to your evening routine can also provide relief. Taking a lukewarm shower before bed can be surprisingly effective. While a cold shower feels good initially, it can cause your body to overcompensate and raise its temperature. A lukewarm shower, however, encourages blood flow to the skin, which helps lower your core body temperature as you dry off. Staying hydrated is crucial, so keep a bottle of room-temperature water by your bed. Finally, try to avoid heavy meals or strenuous exercise too close to bedtime, as both can raise your body temperature and make it harder to fall asleep in an already challenging environment.
