The Power of Blue Carbon
The secret lies in a concept called 'blue carbon'. This refers to the carbon dioxide captured from the atmosphere and stored in coastal and marine ecosystems. While terrestrial forests get a lot of attention as 'green carbon' sinks, their coastal counterparts—mangroves,
tidal salt marshes, and seagrass beds—are often overlooked powerhouses in the climate fight. These ecosystems, though covering a much smaller area than land-based forests, are incredibly efficient at their job. They can sequester, or capture, carbon at a much faster rate, and lock it away in the soil and sediment beneath them for centuries, even millennia.
Meet the Coastal Carbon Champions
Three main types of ecosystems are the stars of the blue carbon world. Mangrove forests, with their iconic tangle of roots, are particularly effective. They thrive at the edge of land and sea, and studies suggest they can sequester carbon at a rate two to four times greater than mature tropical forests. Then there are tidal marshes and seagrass meadows. The waterlogged, low-oxygen soil in these habitats is key. When plants die, they don't fully decompose and release their stored carbon back into the atmosphere. Instead, the carbon-rich organic matter gets buried, layer upon layer, creating a highly stable and long-term carbon store. In fact, mangroves can store three to five times more carbon per acre than tropical rainforests, mostly within their deep soils.
India's Coastal Lifeline
For India, with its extensive 7,500-kilometre coastline, harnessing the power of blue carbon is a massive opportunity. These ecosystems are not just abstract carbon sinks; they are vital to the lives and livelihoods of millions. The Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, is a prime example, providing a crucial buffer against increasingly frequent and intense cyclones. These habitats support fisheries, ensure food security, and protect coastal communities from erosion and flooding. Investing in the protection and restoration of these areas, from the mangroves of Gujarat and West Bengal to the seagrass beds in the Gulf of Mannar, directly supports India's climate goals and enhances the resilience of its most vulnerable populations.
A Double-Edged Sword
The same efficiency that makes these ecosystems so valuable also makes their destruction incredibly dangerous. When coastal habitats are cleared for development, aquaculture, or polluted, we lose more than just their ability to capture future carbon. The vast quantities of carbon stored in their soils for centuries can be released back into the atmosphere, turning a powerful climate solution into a potent source of greenhouse gas emissions. An estimated 340,000 to 980,000 hectares of these vital ecosystems are destroyed globally each year. This degradation not only accelerates climate change but also leaves coastal communities exposed to storm surges, rising sea levels, and economic hardship.
A Path Forward Through Conservation
The message is clear: protecting our coastlines is about more than just building higher walls. It requires a nature-based approach that recognizes the immense value of these living systems. By conserving and restoring mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes, we do more than just protect biodiversity. We create 'living shorelines' that are often more resilient and cost-effective than hard infrastructure. These efforts improve water quality, support local economies, and, crucially, help us meet our national and global carbon reduction targets. Integrating blue carbon into national policies, as outlined in frameworks by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), offers a tangible path to a more sustainable and climate-resilient future for India's coastal regions.
