The Engine Behind Every Ticket
Behind every reserved ticket on Indian Railways, from a long-distance express journey to a short intercity hop, lies the Passenger Reservation System, or PRS. Introduced in 1986 to replace manual ledgers, this computerised network is the unsung hero managing
everything from bookings and cancellations to seat allocation, waitlists, and reservation charts. Developed and maintained by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the PRS evolved from counter-based terminals to the massive online platform it is today, accessed primarily through the IRCTC website and app. In essence, it is the digital backbone of one of the world's largest public transport networks.
Why the Old System Was Strained
The legacy PRS was a marvel of its time, but it was straining under modern digital demand. With nearly 89% of the 65 crore reserved tickets between June 2025 and June 2026 booked online, the system faced unprecedented traffic. Peak periods, especially during the morning Tatkal window, saw millions of users logging in simultaneously, often leading to slow responses, payment failures, and the dreaded 'spinning wheel' of uncertainty. The existing infrastructure, capable of handling around 32,000 bookings per minute, was simply not built for this scale of concurrent digital traffic, creating a bottleneck that frustrated passengers and highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul.
Inside the Next-Generation Upgrade
Recognising these challenges, Indian Railways has initiated a phased migration to a next-generation, cloud-based PRS. This isn't just a minor tweak; it's a fundamental architectural shift. The new system is designed to dramatically increase capacity and reliability. The headline numbers are impressive: the target is to handle over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, a near five-fold increase from the current 32,000. Furthermore, the capacity for handling passenger enquiries (like PNR status or seat availability) is projected to jump ten-fold, from about 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. This upgrade, which began rolling out in August 2026, aims to create a more resilient and scalable platform for the future.
What This Means for Passengers
For the average traveller, these technical upgrades translate into tangible benefits. The primary goal is a faster, smoother, and more reliable booking experience, especially during high-demand periods. With significantly higher capacity, the system should be far more stable, reducing the likelihood of crashes or timeouts during the Tatkal rush. This means fewer instances of payment being deducted without a ticket being issued and a better chance for genuine passengers to secure a last-minute booking. The transition also includes a revamped, more user-friendly IRCTC website and integration with apps like RailOne, which offers features like AI-based waitlist confirmation predictions with up to 94% accuracy.
Building a Smarter, Future-Ready Railway
The new PRS capacity is a cornerstone of Indian Railways' broader digital transformation. The move to a modern, cloud-based infrastructure allows for greater flexibility and the integration of advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). These tools are already being used to improve operational efficiency, from predicting train delays to optimising routes and energy consumption. By creating a robust and scalable reservation system, Indian Railways is not only improving the passenger experience today but also laying the groundwork for a more intelligent and responsive network, capable of serving the needs of a growing and increasingly digital India for years to come.
