Meet Dewi: An AI-Powered Diplomat
Dewi is an artificial intelligence avatar launched by the Indian Embassy in Jakarta to serve as its new digital face. Announced in mid-October 2026, the initiative aims to make information about India more accessible and engaging for people in Indonesia.
Dewi will communicate across the embassy's social media platforms, providing updates on a wide range of topics including Indian culture, travel and tourism, educational scholarships, business and investment opportunities, and important consular information. The launch was strategically timed to coincide with the auspicious occasion of Navaratri and Durga Puja, adding a layer of cultural significance.
The Significance of a Name
The choice of the name 'Dewi' is a masterful stroke of cultural diplomacy. The word derives from the Sanskrit 'Devi', meaning goddess, and is also a common and resonant name in Indonesia with the exact same meaning. This shared linguistic and cultural heritage, rooted in centuries of interaction, is powerfully symbolised in the name. By choosing 'Dewi', the Indian embassy grounds its futuristic initiative in a deep, shared past, creating an immediate sense of familiarity and connection for the Indonesian audience. It transforms a piece of technology into a symbol of the enduring 'mitra' (partnership) between the two nations.
Why Jakarta? The Strategic Context
Indonesia is a cornerstone of India's 'Act East' policy and a crucial strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific. As the world's fourth most populous nation, Southeast Asia's largest economy, and a fellow vibrant democracy, Indonesia's importance to India is immense. The Dewi AI initiative is the latest in a series of efforts to deepen this relationship, which has seen growing cooperation in defence, trade, and technology. The digital sphere is a key frontier in this partnership. India's success with its Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) model is a point of synergy, as Indonesia also seeks to expand its own digital economy and capabilities. Dewi serves a practical purpose in this context, providing a direct and modern communication channel to the approximately 130,000 Persons of Indian Origin and 15,000 Non-Resident Indians in Indonesia, as well as to Indonesian citizens interested in India.
Pioneering Digital Diplomacy
The Dewi initiative is more than just a clever social media campaign; it represents a forward-thinking approach to foreign policy. In an era where information is instantaneous and digital engagement is paramount, traditional diplomacy is being augmented with new tools. By employing an AI avatar, the Indian mission is experimenting with ways to conduct public outreach that are more scalable, accessible, and engaging than conventional methods. This move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for leveraging emerging technologies to improve public service delivery. While AI in diplomacy is still a nascent field, initiatives like Dewi serve as important test cases for how nations can use technology to build bridges, foster understanding, and manage their international relationships in the 21st century. It is a step towards making diplomacy less about closed-door meetings and more about open, continuous digital dialogue.
