A Sanctuary Reawakens for a New Season
Following the annual monsoon closure from July to September, Satpura National Park is set to welcome visitors again from October. This reopening marks the beginning of the prime season for wildlife enthusiasts to explore the park's core areas, which teem
with life after the rains. The park, named after the dramatic “Seven Folds” of the Satpura mountain range, is celebrated for its diverse terrain of sandstone peaks, deep gorges, and the tranquil Denwa River. Unlike more tiger-centric reserves, Satpura is cherished by seasoned travellers for its peaceful atmosphere and lower vehicle density, ensuring a more intimate connection with nature.
More Than Just a Jeep Safari
What truly sets Satpura apart is the variety of ways you can explore its wilderness. It is one of the few tiger reserves in India where visitors can embark on guided walking safaris, allowing for an up-close appreciation of the forest's smaller wonders, from animal tracks to rare plants. Another unique offering is the canoe and boat safaris on the serene Denwa River. Paddling silently along the backwaters provides an unparalleled opportunity for birdwatching and spotting crocodiles and other animals along the riverbanks, all without the sound of an engine. These activities, combined with traditional jeep safaris, offer a multi-dimensional approach to experiencing the jungle.
A Haven for Diverse Wildlife
While tigers are present, Satpura is particularly renowned for its excellent sightings of other fascinating creatures. It is considered one of the best places in India to spot sloth bears and leopards. The park’s rich biodiversity includes Indian Bison (Gaur), wild dogs (dholes), sambar, and the Indian Giant Squirrel, a species rare elsewhere in the country. Birdwatchers will also be delighted, with over 300 species recorded, including the Malabar Pied Hornbill and various migratory water birds found in the Denwa backwaters. This makes every safari, whether by foot, boat, or jeep, a journey of discovery.
Planning Your Satpura Expedition
The ideal time to visit Satpura is between October and June. The winter months (October to February) offer pleasant weather for all activities, while the hotter summer months (April to June) increase the chances of animal sightings near water bodies. Safaris must be booked in advance through the official Madhya Pradesh Forest Department online portal, as vehicle entry is limited to prevent overcrowding. The most popular entry point is the Madhai gate. To reach the park, the nearest major airport is in Bhopal (around 150-170 km away), from which you can hire a taxi for the 3.5 to 4-hour drive. The closest railway station with good connectivity is Pipariya, located about 40-50 km from the park.
