The Master Coordinator
The primary function of the new Director of Cricket role is to act as the central hub for all cricketing operations within the BCCI. Unlike previous positions, this job is designed to create a seamless link between the senior national teams (men's and
women's), the national selection committees, the head coaches, and the entire developmental pipeline. In essence, the Director will be the architect of India's cricketing philosophy, ensuring that every department is aligned towards a common long-term goal. This involves breaking down silos and fostering a more integrated and collaborative structure, a significant evolution from previous administrative setups.
Overseeing the Talent Factory
The foundation of the Director's role will be the oversight of the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, formerly known as the National Cricket Academy (NCA). This is a natural extension of Laxman's current position as the head of the CoE. The responsibilities here are vast, including managing high-performance programs for elite players, overseeing injury rehabilitation and sports science protocols, and charting the course for talent development across all age groups. The Director will be accountable for ensuring the CoE is a world-class facility that produces a steady stream of cricketers ready for the rigours of the international stage.
Guardian of the Player Pathway
A crucial duty is to manage the player pathway, from the Under-19 and India A teams to the senior squad. This involves working closely with the coaches of these developmental teams to identify key training objectives and monitor player progress. The goal is to create a consistent playing style and culture, ensuring that when a player gets a senior call-up, the transition is smooth. The Director will be responsible for making sure the next generation is not just talented, but also strategically groomed to fit into the national team's plans, preventing jarring gaps in skill or temperament.
Long-Term Strategic Vision
This position is less about day-to-day coaching and more about long-term strategic planning. The Director of Cricket will be tasked with looking ahead to major ICC tournaments, such as the 2027 ODI World Cup, and formulating the roadmap to success. This includes advising on player workload management, identifying future leaders, and ensuring the coaching and support staff systems are geared towards peaking at the right time. By stepping back from the immediate pressures of a single series, the Director can maintain a bird's-eye view of Indian cricket's strengths and weaknesses, making strategic interventions where necessary.
A Natural Fit for Laxman
VVS Laxman appears uniquely suited for this role. Having succeeded Rahul Dravid as the head of the NCA, he has deep experience in player development. He has also frequently stepped in as an interim coach for the senior team, demonstrating his rapport with current players and understanding of the modern game. In 2024, Laxman reportedly declined the opportunity to become the full-time head coach, choosing instead to focus on his commitment to building the Centre of Excellence. This new, broader role allows him to continue that foundational work while expanding his influence across the entire spectrum of Indian cricket.
