The Unforgiving Monsoon Skies
The primary reason monsoon disruptions are so severe isn't just the rain you see from the terminal window; it's the volatile and dangerous conditions hidden within the clouds. The season is characterised by the formation of towering cumulonimbus (Cb)
clouds, which are dense storm cells that can stretch to immense heights. These aren't ordinary rain clouds; they are factories of severe weather, producing extreme turbulence, hail, and lightning. For aviation, the most significant threats are the invisible ones: wind shear and microbursts. Wind shear is a sudden change in wind speed or direction, while a microburst is a powerful, localised downdraft of air that can push an aircraft downwards with immense force. These phenomena are especially dangerous during takeoff and landing, the most critical phases of flight. To ensure safety, aviation regulators like the DGCA mandate that pilots avoid these cells by a significant margin, often at least 20 nautical miles, forcing planes onto longer, time-consuming routes.
When Airports Go Under
The battle against the monsoon is fought just as fiercely on the ground. Heavy downpours can quickly overwhelm airport drainage systems, leading to waterlogged runways and taxiways. Standing water on a runway is a serious safety concern as it reduces the braking effectiveness of an aircraft and increases the risk of hydroplaning, where tyres lose contact with the surface. This forces airport authorities to reduce the rate of landings or even temporarily suspend all runway operations for safety inspections. Furthermore, lightning strikes near the airfield can halt all ground handling activities. For safety reasons, staff cannot refuel planes, load baggage, or guide aircraft to their gates during a thunderstorm. This means that even if a flight can land, it may be forced to wait on the tarmac for an extended period, creating a backlog of aircraft and delaying subsequent departures.
An Airline's Logistical Nightmare
For an airline, a single weather delay is rarely a single event; it's the first domino in a long chain of logistical chaos. Most Indian airlines operate on a tight rotation model, where one aircraft is scheduled to fly multiple routes in a single day. A two-hour delay for a morning flight from Mumbai to Delhi means that the same aircraft will be late for its next journey from Delhi to Kolkata, and so on. This is known as a cascading or knock-on delay. These disruptions also wreak havoc on crew schedules, which are strictly regulated by Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) to prevent fatigue. A delayed crew might 'time out', meaning they are legally unable to operate the next flight, forcing the airline to scramble for a replacement crew. During the monsoon, DGCA guidelines often prohibit the extension of these duty times, making schedule recovery even harder. Sometimes, to protect the integrity of the wider network, an airline will deliberately cancel a flight to reset the schedule for that aircraft and crew.
The Human Cost of Uncertainty
Ultimately, the reason monsoon disruptions matter more is their amplified impact on passengers. The June-to-September period in India is not just a rainy season; it coincides with school holidays, major festivals, and crucial business travel. The increased unpredictability means a higher chance of missing a family wedding, a critical meeting, or a connecting international flight. Airports can become extremely congested during long delays, adding to passenger stress. The problem is compounded because alternative modes of transport are also under strain. Heavy rains can lead to waterlogging on roads and disruptions to the rail network, leaving stranded passengers with fewer options. While flying during the monsoon is statistically very safe due to conservative decision-making by pilots and airlines, the season demands a higher level of preparedness from travellers.
