Confirm Timings and Book Your Slot
Before you even think of stepping out, remember that entry to Amrit Udyan is not spontaneous. For its Summer Annuals edition, open from August 16 to September 15, 2026, visitors must book their slots online in advance. Entry is free, but on-the-spot booking
is not available, so planning is essential. Bookings for any given day close at 10 AM the day before. The gardens are open from 10 AM to 6 PM, with the last entry at 5 PM, but it remains closed every Monday for maintenance. Always double-check the official Rashtrapati Bhavan website for any last-minute changes, especially during periods of heavy rain.
Dress Smartly for a Wet Walk
Your comfort will largely depend on what you wear. The pathways in the 15-acre garden can get slippery, so sturdy, non-slip footwear is a must. While umbrellas are permitted, a raincoat or poncho might be a more practical choice, keeping your hands free for balance and taking photos. Opt for lightweight, quick-drying fabrics. Navigating through potentially crowded areas or narrow paths is much easier when you are not struggling with a large umbrella. The goal is to stay dry and comfortable while you explore the various sections like the Central Lawn, Circular Garden, and the new Babbling Brook.
Know What to Carry (and What to Leave)
Security is strict, and rules on permitted items are clear. You can carry your mobile phone, a wallet or purse, and an umbrella. Small handbags are allowed for visitors with babies who need to carry water or milk bottles. However, larger backpacks, eatables, and professional cameras or video cameras are not permitted inside. It's best to travel light. For convenience, facilities like drinking water, first-aid posts, and restrooms are available along the designated visitor route. Rain shelters have also been set up to offer protection during a downpour.
Getting There and Navigating the Grounds
Reaching Amrit Udyan is straightforward. The entry and exit point is Gate No. 35, near North Avenue Road. For those using public transport, the Central Secretariat Metro Station is the most convenient stop. A shuttle bus service runs every 30 minutes from the metro station to the entry gate, operating from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Once inside, the visitor trail is well-defined, guiding you through highlights like the Bonsai Garden, Bal Vatika for children, and vibrant displays of indigenous flowers like Balsam and Aparajita that thrive in the monsoon. The rain accentuates the lush greenery, making for a unique and photogenic experience.
Embrace the Monsoon Experience
A rainy day visit has its own unique charm. The crowds are often often smaller, allowing for a more peaceful and leisurely stroll through the gardens. The rain washes the foliage clean, making the colours of the summer annuals and native plants appear more intense and vibrant. The fresh, earthy smell after a shower adds to the sensory experience. Instead of seeing the rain as a hindrance, view it as an opportunity to see Amrit Udyan in a different light. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the rhythmic sound of rain and the beauty of monsoon blooms, can be a truly memorable escape from the city's hustle.
