The wait for Hardik Pandya’s return to action is nearly over. Indian captain Shubman Gill has confirmed the star all-rounder will mark his comeback in domestic cricket, a crucial step before he can be considered for a national team recall.
The Captain's Confirmation
Speaking on
the eve of India’s opening ODI against New Zealand, captain Shubman Gill provided the clearest update yet on Hardik Pandya’s status. Gill stated that the team management has been in conversation with Pandya and that the dynamic all-rounder will need to prove his match fitness on the domestic circuit before rejoining the Indian squad. 'He hasn't played since the IPL. Hopefully, he will come back soon. He will play some domestic cricket,' Gill told reporters. This path is a standard board-mandated protocol for players returning from long injury layoffs, ensuring they are fully match-ready for the rigours of international cricket.
A Frustrating Road to Recovery
Pandya has been out of competitive cricket since his last appearance for Mumbai Indians in the IPL on May 24, 2026. His journey back has been plagued by a series of unfortunate setbacks. After dealing with back spasms during the IPL, he suffered a quadriceps strain during his rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in June. Just as he was gearing up for a return via an India A series against Australia A, a shin injury surfaced, further delaying his comeback and ruling him out of the ongoing New Zealand tour. These recurring issues have kept the 33-year-old at the CoE in Bengaluru for an extended period as he works to regain full fitness.
The Domestic Proving Ground
The confirmation of a domestic return means all eyes will now be on the schedules for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (50-over), which are set to take place in November and December. These tournaments will serve as Pandya's proving ground. Selectors and the team management will be keenly observing not just his performances with bat and ball, but more importantly, his ability to withstand the physical demands of back-to-back matches. His bowling workload, in particular, will be under intense scrutiny, as his capacity to consistently bowl his full quota of overs is vital to his role in the team.
Why His Return is Crucial for India
Hardik Pandya’s absence creates a significant balance issue for the Indian white-ball teams. As a fast-bowling all-rounder who can bat with explosive power in the lower-middle order, he is a rare and valuable asset. Shubman Gill himself acknowledged this, noting Pandya's unique ability to bowl effectively with both the new and old ball. 'Not many players in the world have his skill set,' Gill said. His return would solve the team's search for a reliable number seven or eight, providing batting depth and a crucial sixth bowling option. As India builds its squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup, integrating a fully fit Pandya back into the setup is a top priority.
