While it can be significantly more expensive, Premium Tatkal has a few advantages: it is only available for online booking, which reduces competition from counter bookings, and it only offers confirmed berths. If you see availability here and are desperate to travel, it might be your most reliable option, but remember that these tickets are generally non-refundable upon cancellation.
Search for Festival Special Trains
Indian Railways often announces special train services to clear the extra rush during major festivals like Raksha Bandhan, Diwali, and Holi. These trains may not appear in your initial search for the most popular train numbers. Keep an eye on the press releases from Indian Railways or check the 'Special Trains' section on the IRCTC website. For this year's Raksha Bandhan, dozens of special services have already been announced connecting major hubs across the country, so be sure to check for services on your route. These trains provide thousands of additional berths and can be the hidden gem you're looking for.
Opt-In for the VIKALP Scheme
When booking a waitlisted ticket, always tick the 'VIKALP' option. This Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme (ATAS) is a free service from Indian Railways that can be a game-changer. If your original ticket remains waitlisted after the chart is prepared, VIKALP automatically considers you for a confirmed seat in any other train heading towards your destination. You can select up to seven alternate trains when you opt-in. You won't be charged any extra money, even if you are moved to a more premium train. It doesn’t guarantee a berth, but it significantly increases your chances of getting one.
Optimize Your Booking Speed
In the world of last-minute bookings, every second counts. Use a high-speed, stable internet connection and book from a desktop or laptop, which is generally faster than a mobile app. Prepare your payment method in advance. The fastest options are the IRCTC e-wallet, which you can pre-load with funds, or UPI. Credit and debit card payments that require multiple OTPs and redirects can slow you down, costing you a ticket. Have your payment details ready to copy and paste or use browser autofill to speed up the process. Avoid logging in from multiple devices with the same account, as it can lead to session errors.
Consider Breaking Your Journey
If a direct train from your source to destination is completely booked, try a more creative approach. Search for tickets to a major station located midway through your journey. From there, book a second ticket on a different train to your final destination. This strategy, known as a 'break-journey', often works because seat quotas are divided among stations along a route. You might find availability on two separate legs of the journey even when the end-to-end booking is full. It requires more planning, but it's a well-known trick among seasoned travellers to get home during the festive rush.
