Navigating the Festive Rush
Every year, travelling out of Mumbai during major festivals like Dussehra and Diwali becomes a significant challenge. Regular trains are booked out months in advance, leaving many scrambling for last-minute options. To ease this burden, both Central and Western
Railways introduce hundreds of 'special' train services. These trains, often identified by a '0' prefix in their number, are temporary services added to high-demand routes. They are a lifeline for those looking to secure a confirmed seat, but booking them requires a specific strategy as they operate on special fares and have unique booking schedules.
Central Railway's 2026 Festive Timetable
For the 2026 festive season, covering Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, Central Railway has announced a significant number of special services starting from mid-October. These trains connect major Mumbai terminals like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) with destinations across the country. Key routes announced include daily services to Gorakhpur, weekly AC specials to Chennai and Bengaluru, and bi-weekly trains to Latur and Mau. For instance, a weekly special will run from CSMT to Chennai every Wednesday from October 14 to November 18, 2026. Another bi-weekly service connects CSMT with Latur every Tuesday and Thursday from October 13 to November 24. Bookings for many of these services opened around September 27, 2026.
Western Railway Extends Services
Western Railway has also bolstered its services to manage the holiday rush. Announcements confirm the extension of several special trains on special fares. For example, services between Dadar and Bhusaval have been extended until late November 2026 to cater to passengers. While many announcements focus on the upcoming Diwali period, it's a year-round strategy. Earlier in 2026, similar special trains were run for the Holi festival, connecting Mumbai with destinations in the north. Passengers are consistently advised to check the official Indian Railways website for the most current information on timings and availability.
How to Book Your Ticket
Securing a ticket on these special trains requires speed and preparation. Bookings typically open at 8:00 AM on a specified date, which can be anywhere from 10 to 60 days before the journey. Tickets can be booked through Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters, the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), and mobile apps like RailOne. To speed up the process, experts recommend creating a 'Master List' of passengers on your IRCTC profile beforehand. Using digital wallets like the IRCTC eWallet or UPI for payment can also be faster than traditional banking methods, which might experience delays during peak booking hours.
Key Routes from Mumbai
The 2026 festive special trains from Mumbai cover a wide range of popular destinations. For those travelling north, there are multiple services towards Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with key stops including Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Banaras, and Mau. For southern travel, new weekly and bi-weekly trains connect Mumbai with Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolhapur. Intra-state travel within Maharashtra is also covered, with special services to Nagpur, Latur, and Bhusaval. These trains will make halts at major intermediate stations like Pune, Nashik Road, Solapur, and Kalyan, providing relief to passengers across the region.
Tips for a Smoother Journey
Once you've booked your ticket, the preparation isn't over. Always double-check your train's departure time and platform number on the day of travel using the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app. Special trains can sometimes have schedule adjustments. Arrive at the station well in advance, as major terminals like CSMT and LTT will be extremely crowded. Pack light to make navigating the station easier. Finally, remember that these trains operate on special fares, which are typically 10% to 30% higher than regular trains, and standard concessions may not apply. Always travel with a valid ticket to avoid any inconvenience during your journey.
