It's All About the Tilt
The reason for the seasons, including this significant September shift, isn't about Earth's distance from the Sun—a common misconception. The true cause is our planet's axial tilt. Earth spins on an axis that is tilted at an angle of about 23.5 degrees.
As we journey around the Sun, this tilt means that for half the year, the Northern Hemisphere is angled more towards the Sun (summer), and for the other half, it's angled away (winter). The equinoxes are the two special moments in the year when this tilt is perfectly sideways relative to the Sun. At this instant, the Sun's rays shine directly on the equator, illuminating the Northern and Southern Hemispheres almost equally.
The Great Celestial Balance
The word "equinox" comes from the Latin for "equal night," suggesting a day when daylight and darkness are perfectly balanced at 12 hours each. This bending allows us to see the Sun's light for several minutes before it has actually risen and for several minutes after it has set, effectively stretching the day. The day when day and night are truly closest to equal is called the "equilux," and it typically occurs a few days after the autumn equinox.

This celestial event has been a cornerstone of human culture for millennia. Historically, the autumnal equinox was a critical marker for agriculture—a time to celebrate the harvest and prepare for the coming winter. In India, the period around the autumnal equinox is associated with Navaratri, a nine-night festival celebrating the victory of good over evil, dedicated to the goddess Durga. It's a time of spiritual reflection, dance, and feasting that ties into the deeper cosmic rhythm of balance and transition signified by the equinox. Many global traditions recognize this as a time for gratitude and finding equilibrium in our own lives, mirroring the balance seen in the heavens.
