As Diwali and Chhath Puja approach, Indian Railways is bracing for the annual festive travel surge. To ease the burden for millions heading home, several unreserved special trains have been announced, offering much-needed relief to passengers.
The Annual Journey Home
The period
surrounding Diwali and Chhath Puja is one of the busiest for India's rail network. Every year, millions of students, professionals, and workers based in metropolitan hubs across the country undertake a journey back to their hometowns. This annual migration, particularly towards Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, puts immense pressure on existing train services. Tickets on regular express trains are often fully booked months in advance, leaving many in a difficult position. The demand surge creates chaotic scenes at major stations and leaves countless individuals seeking last-minute travel options. This year, to pre-emptively manage this rush, Indian Railways has introduced a series of special trains aimed at creating additional capacity on the most congested routes. These services are a lifeline for those who could not secure a reserved berth but are determined to celebrate the festivals with their families.
A Welcome Relief: Unreserved Special Trains
In a significant move to accommodate the festive demand, various railway zones have announced dozens of special train services, many of which are designated as 'unreserved'. This is a crucial distinction. Unlike reserved trains where passengers need a confirmed or waitlisted ticket tied to a specific seat or berth, these unreserved services allow travel with a general second-class ticket purchased from the station counter just before the journey. This provides a flexible and accessible option for a vast number of travellers. Eastern Railway and Northern Railway have been at the forefront of these announcements, deploying services from major hubs like Kolkata, Sealdah, New Delhi, and Anand Vihar Terminal. These trains, often comprising 18 to 20 general second-class coaches, are specifically designed to carry a high volume of passengers on key routes connecting to cities like Patna, Gorakhpur, Jaynagar, Ballia, and Muzaffarpur.
Key Routes and Services in November 2026
To help passengers plan their travel, Eastern Railway has detailed several unreserved services for November. For instance, the 03139 Sealdah-Ballia special will depart from Sealdah on November 11, with a return service on November 12. Another key service, the 03137 Sealdah-Jaynagar special, will run on November 13 from Sealdah and return from Jaynagar on November 14. A Kolkata-Gorakhpur special (03141) is also scheduled for November 13, returning the next day. In addition, multiple pairs of unreserved trains will connect Howrah with Patna and Muzaffarpur. The 03033 Howrah-Patna special and the 03039 Howrah-Muzaffarpur special provide vital connectivity. Northern Railway has also activated numerous services from Delhi, including trains from Shakur Basti to Patna (04404) running on multiple dates between November 5 and 14. Travellers are advised to check the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) or call the railway helpline at 139 for the most current schedules and a complete list of stoppages before their journey.
Navigating Your Journey on a Special Train
While unreserved trains offer a great solution for last minute travel, passengers should be prepared for the experience. These services can become very crowded, and seating is available on a first come first served basis. To ensure a smoother journey, it is highly advisable to arrive at the station well ahead of the scheduled departure time. Travelling with minimal luggage will make it easier to navigate crowded platforms and coaches. It is also important for passengers to remain vigilant about their personal belongings throughout the journey due to the heavy rush. Keeping water and some snacks handy is also a good practice, as pantry car services may not be available on all special trains. Indian Railways often deploys additional Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel to manage crowds and ensure safety at major stations during the festive season, providing an extra layer of security for travellers.
