experiences. They handle tasks ranging from check-ins and room service deliveries to answering basic questions about local attractions. The push towards robotics is driven by a need to streamline operations, manage labor costs, and meet the evolving expectations of tech-savvy travelers. Robots can operate 24/7, speed up processes, and free up human staff to focus on more complex, high-value guest interactions that require a personal touch. While many guests, particularly younger ones, enjoy the convenience and novelty, the integration of these machines introduces a new layer of complexity concerning guest privacy and data.
The Invisible Data Trail
Every interaction with a hotel robot has the potential to generate data. Concierge bots may record common queries, while delivery robots track service patterns and response times. This information can be used to understand guest behavior and personalize future stays, such as noting a preference for extra towels or a specific type of beverage. However, the data collection can also be more invasive. Voice-activated commands given in a smart room can be logged, and some systems have the capability for facial recognition or tracking a guest's movements through the property. Research shows that guests have a strong desire to know what smart technologies are being used and want control over them. One study revealed that 97% of guests want to be informed about the tech in use, and over 92% want the ability to control it or opt out. This highlights a clear path forward: empowerment through choice.
The Power of Clear Choices
To build trust, hotels must provide guests with clear, accessible choices about their data. This goes beyond a lengthy privacy policy hidden on a website. It means giving guests explicit, easy-to-understand options at the point of interaction. For example, before engaging with a robotic concierge, a guest could be offered a simple choice on a touchscreen: a standard interaction with minimal data use, or an enhanced, personalized experience that uses past preferences, with a clear explanation of what that entails. Some researchers suggest that robots should explicitly ask for consent before sharing feedback or complaints with hotel staff, positioning the machine as a neutral intermediary. Regulations like the EU's AI Act are already pushing for greater transparency in chatbot interactions. By making data collection an explicit opt-in feature rather than an invisible default, hotels can reframe the robot as a tool the guest controls, not a device that monitors them.
