Before You Go: Essential Prep
The best time for a Rajasthan road trip is between October and March when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing. The days are sunny and cool, while nights can be chilly, especially in the desert. You can rent a car for self-driving, but hiring
a car with a local driver is often recommended for navigating local traffic and road conditions safely. Ensure the vehicle is well-maintained and has air conditioning. Pack light layers, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and any necessary medications. It's also wise to keep emergency contacts and a first-aid kit handy.
Days 1–3: The Pink City of Jaipur
Begin your journey in Jaipur, the vibrant Pink City. Dedicate three days to exploring its architectural wonders. On your first day, visit the iconic Hawa Mahal and the sprawling City Palace complex. In the afternoon, explore the Jantar Mantar, a fascinating astronomical observatory. Day two should be dedicated to the magnificent Amber Fort, located on a hilltop just outside the city; arriving early helps beat the crowds. You can also visit the nearby Jaigarh Fort. On day three, explore local markets like Johari Bazaar, see the serene Jal Mahal (Water Palace), and perhaps watch a film at the classic Raj Mandir cinema.
Day 4: The Drive to Jodhpur
Check out from your hotel in Jaipur for the drive to Jodhpur, the Blue City. The journey covers a distance of about 350 kilometres and typically takes around six to seven hours via the smooth highways (NH 48 and NH 25). You can make a stop in Pushkar, a holy town famous for its lake and Brahma Temple, to break up the drive. Upon reaching Jodhpur in the evening, check into your hotel and relax. For dinner, consider a rooftop restaurant offering stunning views of the illuminated Mehrangarh Fort.
Days 5–6: Exploring the Blue City
Spend the next two days exploring Jodhpur's treasures. Start your fifth day by visiting the imposing Mehrangarh Fort, which towers over the city and offers incredible views of the blue-painted houses below. Afterwards, visit the nearby Jaswant Thada, a beautiful marble cenotaph. In the afternoon, wander through the narrow, winding lanes of the old city to truly experience its blue charm. On day six, visit the grand Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum, stroll through the Mandore Gardens, and explore the bustling Sardar Market near the Clock Tower. Don't miss the ancient stepwell, Toorji Ka Jhalra.
Day 7: Journey to the Golden City
Today, you'll drive from Jodhpur to the heart of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer. The road distance is approximately 285 kilometres, and the drive takes about four to five hours on well-maintained highways. The landscape transforms into arid desert scenery as you get closer to the Golden City. Upon arrival, check into your hotel. In the evening, visit Gadisar Lake, a serene man-made reservoir, to watch the sunset. You can then explore the local market or simply relax.
Days 8–9: Desert Forts and Sand Dunes
Dedicate day eight to exploring the living Jaisalmer Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site where people still reside. Inside, you'll find the Raj Mahal (Royal Palace), ancient Jain temples, and intricately carved havelis like Patwon Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli. In the afternoon of day nine, head to the famous Sam Sand Dunes, about 45 kilometres from the city. Here, you can experience a camel safari across the vast dunes and witness a spectacular desert sunset. Spend the night in a desert camp, enjoying traditional Rajasthani folk music and dance under a star-lit sky.
Day 10: The Return Journey
After breakfast at the desert camp, it's time to begin your journey back. Depending on your travel plans, you can either drive back to Jodhpur to catch a flight or train, or head to Jaisalmer's own airport for connections to major cities. The drive from Jaisalmer back to Jodhpur will take around five to six hours. Use this day for a leisurely drive, reflecting on the incredible colours, culture, and history you've witnessed across Rajasthan's royal circuit.
