From Area Warnings to Route Precision
For years, weather forecasting for transport has focused on specific points, like an airport or a particular city station. While useful, this approach has limitations. A flight path from Delhi to Mumbai, for instance, crosses multiple weather systems
that a simple origin-and-destination forecast might miss. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is now shifting from this traditional model to a more dynamic one. It has developed and is expanding systems that provide forecasts not just for locations, but for the entire journey or route. This means instead of just knowing the weather at the airport, pilots and railway controllers can see a detailed projection of conditions like wind, turbulence, and rain along the entire operational path. This evolution from broad area warnings to granular, route-based intelligence is a significant leap forward in operational planning.
Clearer Skies for Indian Aviation
In aviation, precision is paramount. Weather is a contributing factor in over 20% of aircraft accidents in India, making accurate forecasting a critical safety tool. The IMD's enhanced services aim to tackle this head-on. With new systems, pilots and air traffic controllers get real-time alerts for fog, wind shear, and turbulence specific to their flight path. This allows for smarter decisions, such as adjusting altitude to avoid turbulence, optimizing fuel calculations for expected headwinds, and reducing the chances of diversions. At major hubs like Delhi's IGI Airport, advanced platforms can now provide alerts within a short, three-hour operational window, crucial for navigating dense winter fog. This leads to fewer cancellations, minimises costly delays, and, most importantly, enhances passenger safety in the skies.
Keeping India's Trains on Track
The benefits of precise forecasting extend to India's vast railway network. The challenges here are different but equally weather-dependent. Heavy monsoon rains can lead to flash floods and track inundation, while landslides in hilly regions pose a constant threat. To combat this, Indian Railways, in coordination with the IMD, has been installing Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) at strategically vulnerable locations, particularly in flood and landslide-prone zones like the Northeast Frontier Railway. These stations provide real-time, localized data on rainfall intensity, wind speed, and temperature. This allows railway authorities to make proactive decisions, such as deploying maintenance crews, issuing speed restrictions, or temporarily halting services in high-risk sections before a disaster strikes. This route-specific monitoring ensures that train operations remain as safe and uninterrupted as possible, even during extreme weather events.
The Technology Powering the Change
This new era of precision forecasting is powered by a massive technological upgrade. The IMD is expanding its Doppler weather radar network from around 40 to over 126 by 2026, aiming for 100% land area coverage. It has also adopted advanced modelling techniques, like the Multi-Model Ensemble (MME) for long-range forecasts and high-resolution models that increase forecast granularity from a 12-km grid to a 6-km one. Furthermore, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are being integrated to analyze vast datasets from satellites, ground stations, and radars, improving the accuracy of highly localized, short-term predictions for events like thunderstorms. This combination of a denser observation network and smarter, AI-driven processing allows the IMD to deliver forecasts that are not only more accurate but also more actionable for transport operators.
