Decoding the 75% Hiring Intent
The headline figure comes from the latest Career Outlook Report by TeamLease EdTech, which surveyed 1,097 employers across India. This 75% represents the overall 'hiring intent' for the second half of 2026, a two-point increase from the first half of the year.
'Hiring intent' doesn't mean every company is hiring, but that three out of four employers surveyed plan to recruit entry-level talent. This sustained demand signals a positive and robust environment for those just starting their careers, reflecting continued economic expansion and a need for fresh talent to fuel growth. However, the real story lies beneath the surface, as the hiring landscape is becoming more selective and skill-focused.
The New Engines of Growth
While the overall outlook is positive, the traditional dominance of the IT sector is being challenged. In fact, hiring intent in IT actually declined from 81% to 76%. The real stars of the show are now consumer-facing and industrial sectors. E-commerce, retail, and technology startups are leading the pack, with a massive 93% of employers in these fields looking to hire freshers. Manufacturing follows closely behind at 89%, bolstered by government initiatives and a push for industrial growth. Other strong sectors include FMCG (86%), Travel and Hospitality (81%), and Power and Energy (74%), showcasing a broad-based recovery and expansion across the economy.
The Most In-Demand Roles Today
The jobs being created are increasingly specialized. Employers are no longer just hiring for generic roles; they are seeking candidates for specific, high-value positions. The most sought-after fresher jobs for the second half of 2026 include AI Application Developer, Junior Semiconductor Design Engineer, Data Centre Operations Associate, Programmatic Advertising Associate, and Inventory & Dispatch Executive. This list highlights a clear shift towards technology-enabled roles across various industries, from core tech and digital marketing to the nuts and bolts of supply chain management. The message is clear: companies want freshers who can step into these specialized functions with a foundational understanding of the role.
Skills That Get You Hired
With employers becoming more selective, a degree alone is often not enough. There's a significant emphasis on practical, job-ready skills. Technical skills like AI/ML, cloud computing, data analytics, and cybersecurity remain in extremely high demand. Certifications in areas like VLSI Chip Design and Cloud Security can provide a significant advantage. However, soft skills are equally critical. Employers consistently rank communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability as essential qualities for new hires. As one CEO noted, companies are being more selective because the skill bar has moved; AI fluency and hands-on project experience are now expected from day one.
Beyond the Metros: The Rise of Tier-2 Cities
The geography of opportunity is also changing. While Bengaluru remains the top city for fresher hiring with an 89% intent, followed by Mumbai (75%) and Chennai (71%), Tier-2 cities are experiencing explosive growth. Cities like Coimbatore, Jaipur, Indore, and Lucknow are emerging as major job hubs, with hiring growth in these locations outpacing that of the metros. This is driven by companies seeking to expand operations at a lower cost and the improved infrastructure in these cities. Sectors like manufacturing, IT services, and e-commerce logistics are creating a significant number of roles, making these cities a strategic choice for freshers looking for a better work-life balance and a lower cost of living.
