Dubai is adding a new, glittering attraction to its roster. Officials have announced plans for a 'tourist path made of pure gold', sparking curiosity worldwide. But what is this project, and what does it mean for the city's famed Gold Souk?
A Literal Golden Walkway
The vision
is surprisingly literal. The Dubai Gold District has announced plans to construct the world's first and longest walkway made of 24-carat gold. According to Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director at the district, this path is not a metaphor but a tangible new tourist attraction slated to open before the end of 2026. The project aims to offer visitors a unique experience, allowing them to literally walk a golden path, reinforcing Dubai's reputation as a global centre for gold and luxury tourism. The announcement was made in late October 2026, creating a new point of interest for both tourists and residents in the historic Deira area.
Part of a Grand Revitalization
This golden path is a headline feature of the much larger Dubai Gold District, a massive redevelopment initiative by developer Ithra Dubai, which is owned by the Investment Corporation of Dubai. Officially launched in January 2026, the district is the modern extension of the famous Gold Souk and a key part of the broader Deira Enrichment Project. This ambitious undertaking aims to revitalise one of Dubai's oldest and most historic commercial hubs. The goal is to blend the traditional charm of the old souk with modern infrastructure, creating a comprehensive destination for residents, tourists, and businesses.
More Than Just Gold
While gold remains the star attraction, the new district is a fully integrated, mixed-use community. The Gold Souk Extension alone covers over a million square feet, featuring hundreds of new retail shops, modern office spaces, and residential apartments. The wider Deira Enrichment Project adds thousands of new homes, several hotels, waterfront promenades, and plentiful parking—a significant upgrade for the traditionally congested area. Plazas with shaded walkways, smart signage, and connections to public transport are designed to create a seamless, pedestrian-friendly experience, bridging the gap between the old market's heritage and the demands of a modern city. The plan also includes spaces for silver and perfume retailers, rounding out the traditional souk experience.
Fusing Heritage with Modernity
A central theme of the Deira Enrichment Project is the preservation of the area's unique cultural heritage. For decades, the Deira Gold Souk has been a major draw, renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and vast selection of jewellery. The developer, Ithra Dubai, worked with existing tenants to ensure the new extension would meet their needs while enhancing the shopping experience for a new generation. The result is a sophisticated design inspired by traditional Arabic architecture, but with climate-controlled, airy interiors and wider walkways. This allows the district to retain its authentic soul while providing the comfort and convenience expected by international tourists and modern retailers like Kalyan Jewellers, Tanishq, and Joy Alukkas, which operate in the district.
Boosting Dubai's 'City of Gold' Status
The golden walkway is a bold statement, intended to do more than just attract footsteps. It's a strategic move to solidify Dubai's identity as the 'City of Gold'. Officials state the project is part of a wider effort to strengthen Dubai's position as a premier global hub for gold trading. The district has already seen a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices this year. Alongside the walkway, there are plans for a major gold and jewellery exhibition intended to be the largest in the Middle East. This initiative, combined with recent Guinness World Records for jewellery crafted in the district, is designed to ensure that Deira remains the undisputed heart of the region's gold trade for decades to come.
