Embrace the Monsoon's Magic
Nestled in the Sahyadri mountain range, Saputara's real charm awakens with the first showers of the season. From July to September, the entire landscape sheds its dry summer coat and dons a vibrant green. The air grows cool and crisp, clouds hang low
over the hills, and the scent of wet earth is a constant companion. For those tired of the city's humidity, Saputara offers a refreshing escape where the monsoon isn't something to avoid, but to be experienced. The entire region becomes a canvas of cascading waterfalls, foggy valleys, and overflowing streams, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and anyone seeking a tranquil retreat.
Chasing Waterfalls and Misty Views
The monsoon is the best time to witness the region's waterfalls in their full glory. Gira Waterfalls, located about 50 km from Saputara, is a seasonal spectacle that roars to life during the rains as the Kapri River takes a dramatic plunge. It’s a popular spot for a day trip, though visitors should be cautious as swimming is not permitted. Back in Saputara, several viewpoints offer breathtaking, if often foggy, panoramas. Sunset Point, also known as Gandhi Shikhar, provides a wide view of the Dang forest and the surrounding hills. While a clear sunset might be rare during the monsoon, the experience of being enveloped in moving clouds is a unique attraction in itself. The Ropeway to Sunset Point offers another thrilling perspective, gliding over the mist-laden valleys.
Activities for a Rainy Day
A rainy day in Saputara doesn't mean being confined to your hotel. A boat ride on the man-made Saputara Lake offers a serene experience, paddling through calm waters surrounded by lush hills. For a dose of local culture, the Saputara Tribal Museum provides insight into the lives and heritage of the local Dangi communities, showcasing their traditional ornaments, instruments, and lifestyle. Nearby, the Artist Village is a great place to see and buy authentic Warli paintings and bamboo crafts, and even try your hand at making some. Enjoying hot corn on the cob or a warm cup of tea from a lakeside stall is a simple pleasure that perfectly complements the cool, wet weather.
The Festive Spirit of Monsoon
To celebrate the season, Gujarat Tourism often organises the Saputara Monsoon Festival, also known as Megh Malhar Parv. This month-long event typically features a variety of cultural programs, including folk dances from across India, art and craft workshops, food festivals, and adventure activities. The festival transforms the hill station into a vibrant hub of activity, drawing visitors from across the state and beyond. Past events have included everything from tribal food festivals and tattoo workshops to rain marathons and storytelling sessions by the lake, making it a lively time to visit.
Essential Travel and Safety Tips
Planning a monsoon trip requires some preparation. The roads to Saputara from cities like Surat (172 km) and Nashik (80 km) are generally well-maintained, but it's wise to check for any local advisories or road closures, especially after heavy rain. When packing, prioritise waterproof jackets, umbrellas, and sturdy shoes with good grip, as trails can be slippery. It's also a good idea to carry waterproof covers for your electronic gadgets. While the weather is pleasant, temperatures can drop, so packing light woollens is recommended. As monsoon is a popular season, booking accommodation in advance is advisable to avoid last-minute hassles.
