A five-day trip is just enough time to get a taste of Sri Lanka's incredible diversity. A popular and efficient route combines the cultural heart of the island with its stunning southern coastline. The journey typically starts with arrival at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, heading inland to Kandy, and then south to the beaches of Mirissa before returning to Colombo for departure. This plan balances travel time with immersive experiences, though be prepared for a significant travel day when moving between the hills and the coast.
Days 1-2: Kandy's Cultural Embrace
After landing in Colombo, the best plan is to travel directly to Kandy, a journey of about 3-4 hours by car. Day one is best spent settling in and taking a leisurely walk around the scenic Kandy Lake. Mirissa Beach is perfect for relaxing, swimming, and enjoying fresh seafood at the many beachfront restaurants that come alive at sunset. Key attractions include the iconic Coconut Tree Hill, a must-visit spot for photos, especially at sunrise or sunset. Parrot Rock offers another fantastic viewpoint over the main beach, best accessed at low tide. While Mirissa is famous for whale watching, the peak season is from November to April. Sightings are less common in September, so it's best to check with local operators about current conditions.
Day 5: Logistics, Budget, and Departure
On your final day, you can enjoy a final Sri Lankan breakfast before making the 2-3 hour journey back to the airport via the Southern Expressway. For a 5-day trip, a mid-range budget per person could be around ₹30,000 to ₹50,000, excluding flights. Flights from major Indian cities like Chennai or Bengaluru are short and relatively inexpensive. Accommodation options are plentiful, from budget-friendly guesthouses costing ₹1,500-₹2,500 per night to more luxurious hotels.
