The Route: An Engineering Marvel
The Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express operates on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a route that is one of the most ambitious railway projects in India. The journey covers approximately 270 kilometres and is a spectacle of modern
engineering, featuring 36 tunnels and 943 bridges. Key highlights include the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 metres above the riverbed, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. The primary route for the service runs from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, with stops at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), Reasi, and Banihal. Following public demand, a stop at Udhampur (officially Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station) has also been approved for a newly sanctioned third Vande Bharat service on this route.
Timings and A Drastic Cut in Travel Time
For decades, the road journey from Jammu to Srinagar on NH-44 was an unpredictable affair, often taking between 8 to 11 hours due to landslides and weather disruptions. The Vande Bharat Express has revolutionised this, cutting the travel time to just under five hours. Two pairs of trains currently operate daily services. The first train (26401) departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM, reaching Srinagar at 11:10 AM. The return service (26402) leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and arrives in Jammu Tawi at 6:50 PM. Another service (26403/26404) also runs between the two cities. The Jammu-bound train (26404) departs Srinagar at 8:00 AM, arriving at 12:40 PM, while the Srinagar-bound train (26403) leaves Jammu at 1:20 PM, reaching at 6:00 PM. The primary service (26401/26402) runs six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays.
Onboard Experience: Built for the Himalayas
This is not a standard Vande Bharat train. Specially designed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, the rake is engineered for the harsh winters of the Kashmir Valley. The train is equipped to operate in temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. It features advanced heating systems for passenger comfort and a heated windshield in the driver's cabin to prevent fogging. To prevent freezing, heating elements are integrated into the plumbing and bio-toilets. The 20-coach train offers two classes of seating: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), both with large windows for panoramic views, rotating seats, onboard Wi-Fi, and GPS-based information systems.
Fares and How to Book
Booking for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat is available through the official IRCTC website and mobile app. Fares are dynamic, but an approximate cost for the AC Chair Car is around ₹715 to ₹880, while the Executive Chair Car costs between ₹1,320 and ₹1,515, inclusive of catering charges. Given the high demand for this route, especially during peak tourist and pilgrimage seasons, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance. Bookings typically open 60 days before the date of travel. The service has been extremely popular since its launch, reflecting the high passenger interest in this convenient new link.
A Game-Changer for Connectivity and Economy
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link provides reliable, all-weather connectivity to a region where road travel is frequently hampered by severe weather. This is a transformative development for tourism, making the Valley far more accessible to travellers from across the country. Beyond tourism, it offers a major boost to the local economy. Farmers and businesses can now transport local products like apples, dry fruits, and handicrafts to markets across India more efficiently. The railway has already begun using the line to transport essential supplies, including fuel, into the Valley, ensuring a stable supply chain that was previously dependent on the volatile highway.
